Oklahoma Men's Golf at the NCAA Finals in California May 24-29 !

Post by OUBeliever56A »

Coming off their sensational 1st Place Regional Win at Rancho Santa Fe Regional at The Farms Golf Club, the Oklahoma Sooner Men's Golf Team will start their NCAA Finals at the Omni La Costa's North Course in Carlsbad, CA. Sooner Sooner, Ben Lorenz was also the low individualist in the Regional.

The championships will be contested at Omni La Costa for the first time, with teams playing 54 holes of stroke play before the 30-team field is cut to 15. The last 15 teams play one final round of stroke play before the top eight teams advance to match play. Oklahoma has won two national championships (1989 and 2017) and finished runner-up in 2021.

The Sooners' streak of 13 straight NCAA appearances under head coach Ryan Hybl is the second-longest in the country. Oklahoma tees off at 2:55 p.m. CT on Friday at the par-72, 7,538-yard track. All 30 teams will play 18-hole rounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After 54-holes the field will be cut to 15 teams for a final 18-holes on Monday. On Tuesday, the top-8 teams will enter the Match Play portion of the NCAA Finals with three rounds of head-to-head matches against other teams.

NCAA Regional individual champion Ben Lorenz will take the top bag at La Costa. The All-American rattled off a career-low 64 in the final round at Rancho Santa Fe to win the title and help OU punch its ticket to the championship. Drew Goodman, who finished ninth at regionals, claims the second bag at his third consecutive NCAA Championship. True freshman Ryder Cowan will make his title debut this week, earning the No. 3 bag for Hybl's squad. Luke Kluver and Jase Summy, each with NCAA Championship experience, round out the starting lineup. Freshman PJ Maybank III will serve as Oklahoma's substitute if necessary.

Good luck to the Sooners in California for the next week.

The Sooner Men's Golf Team had a rough day on the course at the North Course at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, CA on Friday. the team shot a 13-over par round of 301 and sit in a tie for 19th place after the first round of the NCAA Finals. Luckily, the team has two more rounds to accomplish the goal of advancing to the final 18-hole round by the team on Monday as the top 15 teams advance after Sunday's round. The Sooners are 3 strokes out of 15th as the second round starts today.

Virginia and Arizona shot the best round of the day at 2-over, 290 in the opening round.

The Sooners tee off in the morning group today as they start on the front nine at 7:35 PCT, (9:35 CST). The Sooners played in the afternoon on Friday and started on the back nine.

Jase Summy led the Sooners in round one with an even par round of 72. He was 4-under after his first nine holes but dropped the four shots on his final nine holes. Ryder Cowan shot a 1-over, 73 as he carded 15 pars, 2 bogeys and a birdie. Ben Lorenz and Drew Goodman both shot a 6-over, 78 for the final two 'counted' scores for the team. Luke Kluver struggled on Friday as he carded only 9 pars and no birdies in his round. As a team, the Sooners logged 7 other scores in their rounds with only 9 birdies to offset them.

The Sooners need to post a much better round to get themselves back in the hunt to advance after Sunday's round.

The Oklahoma Sooners Men's Golf Team shot 14-over par on Saturday and are now at 27-over par after two rounds at the NCAA Finals at the Omni La Costa North Course in Carlsbad, CA. They are currently in 19th Place, 5 shots out of the Top 15, which is the cut line after Sunday's round today. The leaders in the tourney is Virginia at 1 over par through two rounds.

Individually, Jase Summy shot another good round as he shot a 1-under, 71 on Saturday. He sits in a tie for 4th place in the tournament after shooting 72 and 71 in his two rounds. Ben Lorenz shot a 2-over 74 on Saturday. He is 8 over par through his two rounds with a 78 and a 74. Drew Goodman shot a 4-over 76 to give himself a 10-over par total after a 78 and 76 in his two runs. On Saturday, PJ Maybank stepped in for Luke Kluver as the Sooner 5th player and shot a 9-over 81 on Saturday. Ryder Cowan shot a 10-ver 82 on Saturday for a two day total of 11-over par after a 73 and 82 in his two rounds.

The Sooners tee of starting at 12:22 on the back nine today. The back nine played very tough yesterday for the Sooners as they 14-over par on the back nine on Saturday. The story was much the same on Friday as they started on the back nine then and struggled on the nine to open the tourney. The Sooners need to make up 5 to 10 shots today to be able to advance to the final 15 teams who play on Monday in the final round of stroke play. So far in the tourney, there have only been 3 team rounds under par so the path is to limit their score to maybe 5 or 6 over and hope that the other teams continue to post rounds of double-digit over par scores.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about Saturday's round.

In a similar effort that the Oklahoma Sooner Men's Golfers made in the final round of the NCAA Regional, the Sooners once again shot a very good round with their "proverbial backs' were against the wall on Sunday as they shout a 2-under round (3rd best of the day) to move into 13th place and qualify for the 4th 18-hole round of the NCAA Finals. The 2-under, 286 round stood out as Illinois shot 6-under (1st place), Texas Tech shot 3-under (17th place and just out of the final round) and Florida State also shot 2-under (4th place). Florida added the only other subpar round on Sunday with a 1-under par and is in 8th place.

Oklahoma's 25-over par total after three rounds is 5 shots out of 8th place, which is the cut line after Monday's final stroke play round. The top eight (8) teams will advance to Match Play starting on Tuesday, so the Sooners to play well once again. The Sooners tee of on the front nine on Monday starting at 10:45 AM PCT.

Individually for the Sooners the scores were like this:
  • Ben Lorenz led Oklahoma with a 2-under round of 70 that included 5 birdies on the front nine (the teams' back nine as the started on Hole #10 on Sunday). Lorenz is at 4-over for 54-holes and is in a T40th.
  • Drew Goodman shot a 1-under 71, with 5 birdies on the day. Goodman is at 9-over for the tourney in a T73rd.
  • Luke Kluver, back in the 5-man Sooner team on Sunday after sitting out Saturday's round. He shot a 1-under par 71 as he shot even on the back followed by 1-under on the front nine.
  • Ryder Cowan shot a 2-over par on Sunday for the 4th counting score for the Sooners. His round could have been one or two-shots better though as he dropped 2 shots to par on the final hole, #9. I am sure that was a tough way to end the day for him. Cowan is at 14-over par I think. The scoreboard shows 13 over, but that does not add up as his scores of 82, 74, 74 add up to 14-over.
  • Jase Summy after shooting two very good rounds on Friday (72) and Saturday (71) shot a 5-over par 77. Summy was 1-under for 15 of the 18 holes on Sunday. Those other three holes, #10, #1 and #2 were his nemesis as he was 6-over on those three holes. Summy is at 4-over par for the tournament in a T27th.
Good luck to the Sooners in their round today. I think another 2-under par round might solidify them in the Top 8. I hope they have saved their best for last today.

Well, as has been said above, the Sooners were right there, they had a real shot to finish in the Top 8 teams on Monday and move into the Match Play portion of the NCAA Finals, but simply could not get over the 'hump' and finish.

It is true that the Sooners played the final hole, #18, on Monday with a birdie (Lorenz), two pars (Goodman, Kluver), a bogey (Summy) and a double bogey (Cowan) but there were other holes that greatly affected the round. But those last two finishes, the bogey and the double bogey has to hurt for a while. The Sooners finished 1 shot out of the Top 8 team. Just 1 less shot would have forced a playoff, two less shots would have put OU in the Top 8.

The Sooners shot 1-over for their round on Monday. That gave them a 26-over par score of 1178. The last spot in the Top 8 went to Georgia Tech at 25-over par, 1177. Georgia Tech finished on the front nine and #9. They played their last hole in even par to finish their round. As described above, OU played #18 in 2-over for the 4 scores that counted. That was the difference.

Earlier in the round, Luke Kluver had a double on #7 to move him to 3-over early in the round and then finished the front nine at 4-over. That basically took him out of the top 4 players for the Sooners which forced the Sooners to have one less option at the end. Ryder Cowan was off to a great start on the front nine as he was 3-under par through 6 holes. then on #8, Cowan made a triple bogey 6 on a Par 3. that took him to even par on his round. An eagle (2 on a Par 4) for Cowan on #13 moved him back to 1-under. But Cowan finished with a bogey, a birdie and a the double bogey on #16, #17 and #18. Drew Goodman also had an eagle on #11 (2 on a par 4) as a highlight moment.

Here are the final scores for the Sooner on Monday.

Ben Lorenz shot a 73, 1 over.
Drew Goodman shot a 2-under, 70.
Ryder Cowan shot a 73, 1-over.
Luke Kluver shot a 78, 6-over.
Jace Summy shot a 1-over, 73.

The Sooners round scores were, 301 (+13), 302 (+14), 286 (-2) and 289 (1-over). There final two rounds at 1-under was the 2nd best finish in those two rounds.

It was almost a great comeback by the Sooners. There were in essence many shots that determined the outcome for the Sooners not just the last holes as they were played.
