First Round Report from Monday

The Oklahoma Women Golf Team played a solid round of golf on Monday and shot a 6-over round of 294 that places them in a tie for 6th place with Arizona. The prize in the NCAA Regional action starts a 5th place which is 4-over par by Baylor.

The Sooners were led by Savannah Barber with a 1-under round of 71. She had 4 birdies and 3 bogeys in her round and birdied the 18th hole to finish the day. Isabella Schlick and Reagen Chaney both shot 1-over par as they both also birdied the 18th hole to finish. Both golfer only recorded birdies, pars and bogeys in their round as they minimized the 'other' scores during their round which is very important. Nina Lang shot a 5-over 77 for the day as she also had no 'other' scores for the 4th team score used. Gracie Mayo shot a 7-over, 79 as she did have two double bogeys during her round on two par 5s. She did offset that somewhat with 3 birdies in her round.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the day.

Barber is also in good position as an individual player with her 1-under round and sits in a tie for 6th place with 12 golfers under par. Schlick and Chaney are in a tie for 18th at 1-over par.

The Sooners tee off starting at 8:55 AM (10:55 CST) today and will play with Colorado State and California.

Good luck to the Sooner Women today as they try to play their way into 5th place so they would qualify for moving on to the NCAAs in about 10 days.

The Oklahoma Women Golfers stood up and played very well yesterday in Las Vegas. They shot a 3-under 285 for the day and played themselves into a real chance to finish in the Top 5 teams in the Regional and can qualify for advancement into the NCAA Finals if they can play well again today. The 3-under score today was the 4th best score of the day. Oklahoma really helped themselves on the final hole yesterday as four of the team members birded the final hole which lowered the team score by 3 strokes.

In the team race for the Top 5, Arkansas (16-under par) and Purdue (12-under par) are running of with the #1 and #2 spots and will advance to the NCAAs unless one of them jut fall apart today. But the 3rd through the 7th spots are up for grabs.

In 3rd is UCLA, who is 2-under par, after rounds of 3-over and then 5-under yesterday. Florida State is in 4th at 1-under par after rounds of 5-under and 4-over yesterday. Baylor is at 2-over par in 5th after rounds of 4-over and 2-under on Tuesday. Oklahoma is in 6th place at 3-over after rounds of 6-over and 3-under on Tuesday. Arizona is in 7th with their 5-over score after rounds of 6-over and 1-under on Tuesday.

The Sooners have been led this week by Savannah Barber who is 4-under par after two days as she is in a tie for 6th position in the tourney. She has played herself into the individual leaders in the tourney with two good rounds of 1-under and 3-under. On Tuesday, Barber birdied the final three holes to boost both her team and herself. Currently, she would qualify for the NCAA Finals as an individual as the Top 3 players not on the 5 teams that advance also advance. Isabella Schlick for the Sooners is also in that race as she is 1-under par and in a Tie for 13th. Schlick has shot 1-over and a 2-under to produce her 1-under total. Schlick is currently maybe 2 shots out of being in those Top 3 individuals.

Of course, with a good round today, the Sooners can all advance to the NCAA Finals with a 5th Place finish or better.

Along with Barber's 3-under round and Schlick's 2-under round, Nina Lang and Gracie Mayo both shot 1-over to complete the team score of 3-under on Tuesday. Reagan Chaney shot a 2-over round on Tuesday. The Sooners lowered their score by 9 shots on Tuesday over Monday's scores. The team did not record a score above a bogey on Tuesday which is very good. Impressively, there was not a '6' on any of the five cards for the Sooners. Each of the Sooners recorded at least 2 birdies.

The Sooners start on hole #10 today with the tee times starting at 8 AM Vegas time, which is 10 AM Oklahoma time. The order of players for the Sooners is Mayo, Lang, Chaney, Schlick and Barber.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about Tuesday's round.

Good luck to the Sooners in Wednesday final round as they play for a chance to advance to the NCAA Finals.

The first thing to mention about the final round at the NCAA Regional in Las Vegas at the Spanish Trail Country Club is the weather. I do not know what was going on, but I found that the wind was blowing about 20 MPH but that was all. All the scores on Wednesday were way up. I mean WAY UP! Only two teams shot better than 7-over par and no team shot under par. I only counted a handful of individual scores under or near par for the day. So, understand that as you read below.

Starting on the back nine on #10 was not kind to the Sooners. As they started their round they were immediately having trouble. Their hard earned position from the first two days of play to put them in position to finish in the top 5 was in jeopardy. Their only hope was that everyone else was playing having a very tough time on the course as well. On the back nine in their first 9 holes, Gracie Mayo shot the best score of 4-over amongst the Sooners. By the time the Sooners finished their round, the best score was shot by Mayo with a 77, 5-over par.

The final result for the day was a 30-over Par round of 318 for the Sooners. They ended up in a Tie for 8th Place in the Regional with a final score of 33-over Par. The Sooners were tied with Kent State. The valued 5th Place score was 14-over Par.

For the tourney individually, Savannah Barber shot the lowest score at 6-over par as she shot rounds of 71, 69 and 82 and finished in a tie for 25th. Isabella Schlick finished at 7-over par with rounds of 73, 70 and 80 to finish in a tie for 30th. Reagan Chaney shot 10-over par with rounds of 73, 74 and 79 to finish in a tie for 36th. Gracie Mayo finished at 13-over par with rounds of 79, 73 and 77 and finished in a tie for 43rd. Nina Lang finished at 17-over par with rounds of 77, 73 and 83 to finish in a tie for 52nd.

Arkansas, Purdue, Baylor, UCLA and Florida State advanced from the Las Vegas Regional to advance to the NCAA Finals.

The Sooners played pretty well the first two rounds of the Regionals. But they did struggle on the final day as they shot the 2nd highest score of the day. It was an unfortunate finish to the Regional for the Sooner Women as their season finished yesterday.
