Oklahoma Baseball Hosts Texas in RRR Series on Fri, Sat & Sun

The 18th ranked Oklahoma Sooner Baseball Team host the Texas Longhorns in a Red River Rivalry baseball 'showdown' at L Dale Mitchell Park in a 3-game series scheduled for games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. First pitches are set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday (all times CT).

The series can be watched via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and heard locally in Oklahoma on SportsTalk 1400 AM/99.3 FM or nationwide on The Varsity app. Chad McKee and alum Blake Brewster will be on the ESPN+ call while Toby Rowland and alum Rich Hills will call the action on OU's radio network. Oklahoma (25-14) enters the series with a 14-4 conference record and in first place by 3 games over Texas and 2.5 games over Oklahoma State. (OSU defeated BYU on Thursday 17-5 in Provo, UT.) Texas (25-17) and 11-7 in conference play is unranked. OSU is now 12-7 in conference play after their first game win over BYU.

The Sooners currently are playing very well offensively behind a quartet of hitters in Carmichael, Madron, Snyder and Mackenzie. With Nicklaus and Spikerman returning to the lineup recently, the Sooner offense could even play better down the stretch. But Lane and Walk have filled in nicely for Nicklaus and Spikerman. Willits, Pettis and Mudler have contributed well this season also as starters this season.

Oklahoma has settled in with four starting pitchers throwing well with Kyson Witherspoon, Grant Stevens, Brendon Girton and Braden Davis. With Girton starting against Wichita State on Tuesday, I expect the starters to face Texas with Davis throwing on Friday, Witherspoon on Saturday and Stevens on Sunday. The Sooner bullpen of Ryan Lambert, Dylan Crooks, Reid Hensley, Carson Atwood and Malachi Witherspoon has pitched well lately also.

Sooners win 9-4 over Texas in front of a record crowd (4,812 plus those on the berm) at L Dale Mitchell Park.

The Oklahoma Sooners Baseball Team got started early on offense and received a strong pitching performance from Braden Davis for the 9-4 win over the Texas Longhorns. The Sooners scored 4 runs combined in the 2nd and 3rd innings to lead 4-0. Then, in the 7th the Sooners scored 3 more runs to lead 8-2.

While the offense was good for the Sooners, the effort by Braden Davis was THE key to the win. Davis pitched 6.0 strong innings allowing 7 hits, 2 run, 3 walks and 9 Ks. Davis allowed 6 singles and 1 double in his outing including 101 pitches as he picked up the win. Great job by Davis. Following Davis to the hill, three middle relievers, Campbell, Atwood and Lodes pitched 2 innings combined allowing 5 hits and 3 runs with 1 walk and 1 K. They allowed a double and a HR in their 2 innings. Malachi Witherspoon pitched the 9th inning for the Sooners that included a walk and 3 Ks.

On offense, the Sooners got some unexpected help from the Longhorns as they committed 5 errors in the game leading to 4 unearned runs for the Sooners. Easton Carmichael, Anthony Mackenzie and Kendal Pettis and Jaxon Willits each had two hits for the Sooners. John Spikerman, Pettis and Willits had 2 RBIs each. Mackenzie and Scott Mudler each added 1 RBI also. Oklahoma collected 10 hits and 3 walks, 1 HBP and 3 runners reached base by errors committed by Texas. Oklahoma also stole 3 bases in the game. The Sooners hit two HRs in the game. Willits had a solo-HR to lead off the 6th to make the score 5-2. Mackenzie had a solo lead-off HR in the 7th to make the score 6-2.

The win by the Sooners moved the record to 26-14 for the Sooner and 15-4 in conference play. West Virginia won over Baylor 18-5 to remain 3 games behind the Sooners. Texas won twice of BYU to end their series and has a 14-7 record in conference and 2 games behind the Sooners as Oklahoma has two more games to play this weekend.

Due to anticipated weather, this weekend's Oklahoma baseball series vs. Texas has been adjusted.

Sunday, April 28 will now feature a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. CT.

Saturday's game (originally scheduled for 4 p.m.) will be played as the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Game 3 will start approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of Sunday's 1 p.m. contest.

Fans who purchased tickets for Saturday's originally scheduled game can use them for the first game of the Sunday doubleheader, with stadium gates opening at 11 a.m.

Fans who purchased tickets for Sunday's game (originally scheduled for 2 p.m.) can use them for the second game of the DH. The stadium will be cleared after the conclusion of the first game and re-entry will be required for the finale.
