Sooner Women's Tennis: Final Weekend spent in Texas: Baylor-TCU

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The #20 Oklahoma Sooner Women's Tennis Team will finish the Big 12 regular season on the road with two matches this week. On Friday, they will be in Waco to play #34 Baylor on Friday in a match that starts at Noon. On Sunday that will be in TCU to play TCU in a 1 PM match.

The OU Women (9-2) are currently in 3rd place all alone in the Big 12 Standings behind OSU (12-0) and Texas (10-1). Texas Tech is in 4th at 8-3 while Baylor and TCU are in a tie for 5th at 7-4. While OU is playing the two 5th place teams, OSU only has one match against K-State. Texas plays the opposite schedule that OU plays as they play TCU then Baylor on Fri-Sun. Tech plays West Virginia and Cincinnati. If think go well OU can finish no worse than their current 3rd Place position.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the tough closing weekend for the Sooner Women.

The article has selection hot spots for live video and live stats for each match this weekend.

Good luck to the Sooners this weekend as the Sooners look to finish the year strong. Maybe, either TCU or Baylor can surprise Texas as well.

The Oklahoma Sooner Women's Tennis Team defeated Baylor in Waco yesterday 4-0 and moved to 10-2 in conference play and 15-5 overall. The win was secured by winning 2 of the 3 Doubles matches to win the Doubles Point for the 15th time this year and then by winning the first three singles matches to win 4-0 over the Baylor Bears in a ranked win for the Sooners.

The #1 and #2 doubles teams won the Doubles Point for OU after the #3 team fell to Baylor to open the doubles play. Then in the Singles play, the #4, #3, and #6 Sooner players won their matches in two sets to seal the victory.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the win.

The Oklahoma Women's Tennis Team finished their regular season today in Ft. Worth with a 4-2 come from behind win over the Horned Frogs.

OU lost the Doubles Point as the Sooner #1 Team of Guzman and Gilheany dropped their match 6-1 to TCU. That is very unusual that those two do not win. The #2 Sooner team with Garcia Ruiz and Safarova won their match 6-4. The final match at #3 with Noel and Catanzarite went to a tie breaker that TCU won 8-6 for the Doubles Point.

Trailing 1-0, the Sooners needed four singles points to win the match. At #6, Emma Straker won her match 6-1, 6-4 to tie the score at 1-1. At #1, Garcia Ruiz dropped her match 6-2, 6-2. Garcia Ruiz had won something like 10 singles matches before this defeat. At #2, Dana Guzman then won her match 6-2, 6-3 to once again tie the score at 2-2. Florencia Urrutia, at #4, won a three set match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback win for Oklahoma to make it 3-2. At #5, Chloe Noel sewed up the match with a 2 set win with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win to win the overall match for OU 4-2. The final singles match at #3, had Alina Shcherbinina for Oklahoma ahead in the 3rd set 4-6, 6-1, 5-1 when play was stopped.

The win raised the Sooners Big 12 conference record to 11-2 and a 3rd Place finish in the conference behind OSU 13-0 and Texas 12-1. Congrats to the Sooners on their 3rd Place finish this season in conference play.

Their Sooners will play in the Big 12 Tournament starting on April 17th against Houston (0-13) at 3 PM in Stillwater where OSU is hosting both the Men's and the Women's tourneys.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the Sooners win over TCU today.

https://soonersports.com/news/2024/4/14 ... win-at-tcu

As I noted above, Sophomore Julia Garcia Ruiz in her singles match and the Big 12's singles leader dropped her first match of the spring today.

As I also mentioned, Guzman and Gilheany in doubles suffered only their second defeat of the season as a pairing in doubles.

Again Congrats to the Sooner Women!
