OU Sooner Women's Tennis: Two home Matches this week: Thu, Sat

The Oklahoma Sooner Women's Tennis Team will host two matches this 'weekend' on Thursday and Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

On Thursday night in a 5 PM match the Sooners (7-2 in Big 12 play) will host BYU (6-3 in Big 12 play). On Saturday, the Women will host Texas Tech (8-1) in a Noon match.

Both matches are important for the Sooners (in 4th place in the Big 12) as they try to work themselves up to a 2nd or 3rd place finish in the Big 12 this season.

The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Tennis Team won their 3rd consecutive Big 12 Match with a 6-1 win over BYU on Tuesday evening in almost perfect weather outdoors at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

The Sooners once again won the Doubles Point with the #1 and #3 Sooner teams winning thier matches 6-2 and 6-3 respectively. The Sooners #2 was leading 5-3 when double play was halted. In the Singles, the Sooners won the first three matches to finish as the Sooners won the #2, #5 and #1 matches for the overall Match win. Playing in extended play the Sooners also won the matches at the #6 and the #4 spots.

The win by the Sooners over BYU sets up a important match with Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon as the Sooners moved to 7-2 in Big 12 play. Texas Tech dropped their match on Thursday to Texas which gives them an 8-2 record in Big 12 play. The Sooners match against Texas Tech will be Saturday at 12 p.m. CT for their final home match of the regular season and Senior Day against No. 26 Texas Tech. OU will celebrate the careers of seniors Dana Guzman and Florencia Urrutia. The match will Texas Tech could determine the 3rd place team in the Big 12 Conference.

Congratulations to the Sooner women on their win and Good luck to them on Saturday against the Red Raiders.

On Saturday, (sorry for my late post about this) The Oklahoma Sooner Women's Tennis Team defeated Texas Texas in a battle for 3rd place in the Big 12 Women's Tennis standings. The Noon match on Seniors Day at Headington Family Tennis Center was won by OU 4-3 over the Red Raiders.

Prior to the match, the Sooners honored their two seniors. Dana Guzman and Florencia Urrutia were recognized for all of their accomplishments while at the University of Oklahoma.

The Double Point was won by Oklahoma by winning the final two matches at the #2 and #3 spots. The match between two #1 doubles team (both ranked in the Top 20) was won by Texas Tech quickly 6-2. It was the first loss of the season for the #19 team of Guzman and Gilheany. But at the #2 spot, Garcia Ruiz/Safarova won their match soon after at 6-3 to even the doubles. At #3, Noel/Catanzarite for OU earned the Doubles point with a 2-point tie breaker win at 7-6 (7-5).

With one point in hand, the Sooners and Red Raiders lined up for the six singles matches. At the #3 spot, Shcherbinina dropped her match to Tech in 2 sets. The Tech win evened the score at 1-1. At the #5 spot, Noel for OU won her match in 3 sets to give OU the one point lead at 2-1. At the #6 spot, Tech's player rallied from one set down to defeat OU's Straker to even the score at 2-2. In the #2 spot, OU's Guzman rallied from 1 set down to win two straight sets and win the Sooners 3rd point of the match. At #1, Garcia Ruiz then won in 3 sets to win the overall match for the Sooners 4-2. The remaining match was played to conclusion as Urrutia playing in the 4th spot, dropped her match in 2 sets to make the final score 4-3.

The Sooners close out the regular season on the road next week, starting with a match on Friday, April 12, at Noon against No. 35 Baylor before taking on No. 62 TCU on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m. CT. Next week is the final week of the Big 12 regular season play before the Big 12 tourney.
