Oklahoma Sooner Rowing Team: Opens their Season the March 22nd

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooner Women's Rowing team opens their season on March 22nd on OKC with action following the next day in the Dallas area on the 23rd. You might be wondering, a Sooner Rowing Team? Yes, there is one with 54, by my count, athletes on the roster. I stumbled on this team a couple years ago when I moved to Norman. Driving up and down Norman, I see them running between the football stadium and the rowing center on the south side of LNC. I have even met a few of them in the parking lot of LNC after a gymnastics meet last spring.

Sarah Trowbridge is the Coach, and she has 6 assistants on her staff. Here is the Coaches info and the roster for the team.

On Friday the 22nd of March, up at the Oklahoma River in the Boathouse District the Sooners will open with a rowing 'dual' against Kansas.

Then the next day, the 23rd and the 24th of March, the team will be at White Rock Lake (NE side of Dallas) to compete against SMU and Texas.

The team fields Varsity and Novice boats in the 1's, 2's, 4's and 8's boats from posting about the team the last two years. I will not promise I know anything more than the teams sit in a boat and row as fast as they can. the "1" or "4" represents the number of rowers in the boat. the 4's and 8' have a coxswain in the boat as a leader of the rowers stroke time during the race.

Here is their schedule:

But these woman are athletes that work on their skills all year just like other sports at Oklahoma. From what I read about their regattas, they are improving over the last couple fo years also.

It sounds like the Sooners did pretty well in their Rowing regattas this weekend. Here is the Sooner staff wrtiers articles about the OKC and Dallas area competitions.

I would say being winners in several races including a sweep on Sunday against the #18 ranked Mustangs is a very good indication for the Sooner Rowing Team.

Congratulations to the Team.
