Oklahoma Volleyball: Hosts Kansas State in Thurs-Fri DH @ 6 PM !

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooner Volleyball Team will host Kansas State on Thursday and Friday nights in 6 PM matches at McCasland Field House. The Sooners will try to win their first Big 12 Match this season by defeating the Wildcats. The Wildcats are 4-4 in Big 12 play and 10-7 overall. OU is 0-7 in Big 12 play and 6-10 overall.

Kansas State has split DHers with TCU and Baylor who are both in the top half of the Big 12. They have two other wins against I-State and West Virginia to teams in the bottom of the Big 12. Their other two losses have been to Cincinnati and UCF. UCF is in the top half and Cincy is in the bottom half. The reviews about K-State are mixed based upon that. OU has played against all top half Big 12 teams so far losing two to Texas and UCF. They have lost single matches to TCU, BYU and Kansas.

To me the goal for OU from her on out in 2023 is play better than .500 in the Big 12 the rest of the way. The Sooners have 11 matches to play in the Big 12. If they could go 9-2 the Sooners could reach .500 in the Big 12. that might not be realistic, but against the almost the bottom half of the Big 12 I would think it could happen. I realistic goal might be to finish 7-4 in their last eleven matches to finish at 7-11 in the Big 12.

I think the Sooners have the offense needed at the net to win. They are serving more quality serves, but still have too many serving errors and receive/first touch misplays though. If they can improve those two things, the Sooners can start to win these close matches that they have played all season, especially in the Big 12.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the K-State matchup. The matchup between OU and Kansas State also includes a brother-brother matchup as Jason Mansfield coache K-State. Jason is Coach Aaron Mansfield's older brother and he is also at K-State in his first year.

I will be there tonight to see the Sooner VB team play. I wish them the best of luck and high-level play. I am ready to see a Sooner victory tonight.

The Oklahoma Sooner Volleyball Team got the job done last night, just barely! But they won their first Big 12 match of the season and broke a few skids in the process.
  • The Sooner won their first match since Sept 15th when they defeated UCLA 3 sets to 2 sets in McCasland Field House.
  • The Sooners won 2 sets in a match for the first time since their defeat by TCU at McCasland on October 11th. In that match, the Sooners won the first two sets before dropping three straight sets to TCU.
  • The Sooners won their first 5 set match since that UCLA match on Sept 15th. The Sooners have won 2 of 3 five set matches this year as they lost to Notre Dame in 5 sets.
  • The Sooners won three straight sets for the first time since Sept 8th when the Sooners swept Illinois.
  • The Sooners broke a streak of winning only 3 sets in the last 27 sets (3-24) with their win last night. They won 3 sets to equal the number of sets won in the last 8 matches.
  • The Sooners won on Thursday night with a rough 3-straight set comeback win after K-State won the first two sets.
Here were the set scores;

K-State 25-15
K-State 25-19
Oklahoma 15-25
Oklahoma 20-25
Oklahoma 16-14

The Sooners did not start well though last night. Kansas State won the first set 25-15 as the Sooners did not play very well. The Sooners committed 17 errors in the set. That was 11 more than K-State committed. In addition to that the Sooners only had a 32% on their side out attempts. That makes it very tough to win a set. Shelton and Kemohah were the lone bright spots for the Sooners is the first set.

In the second set, the Sooners played a bit better, but still had too many errors. The Sooners committed 14 errors while K-State committed on 7. The Sooner started well as they lead 4-0 behind Corral-Blagojevich (MCB) serving. They later led 12-9 after a kill by Shelton. But from that point on in the set, OU served 8 more times and did not win a point on their serve. K-State won 8 points on their serve in the same time frame of the set as the Wildcats won 25-19. Kemohah, Shelton, Preston and Chamberlain and MCB led the Sooners.

A subtle change in Set 3 included Chloe Kaminski being placed into the rotation on the back row and to serve. While she di dnot score any points the back row seemed to play better in the set. OU only committed 7 errors in the set with K-State committing 13. The Sooners also out-hit K-State with 12 kills to 8 and outserved K-State with 2 aces and 2 errors compared to just 4 errors by K-State. The Sooners sided out K-State at an 81% rate in the set.

In the 4th set, OU trailed early. At 9-5 in favor of K-State with the Sooners only winning 2 points on their serve. A successful kill by Shelton made it 9-6 and started the comeback. When a K-State error at the net gace OU a point, the score was 12-12. OU built a lead with the score 19-16 on another K-State error. But the Wildcats managed to tie the set at 19-all on a K-State kill. But the Sooners came roaring back as they won 6 of the next 7 points with OU picking up 5 kills as they closed the set. OU had a total of 9 errors compared to K-State's 11. OU had a 65% side out% in the set. Shelton, Preston and Burts led the offense Chamberlain picking up 3 service aces in the sets.

In the shortened 5th set playing to 15, the Sooners held early leads of 3-1 before 6-3 before K-State rallied to tie the set at 9-8. The lead grew to 13-9 for K-State. OU's back was against the proverbial wall at that point. After a K-State error at the net, Raylee Fay was brought into the set in her only appearence of the Set/Match to serve. She picked up a Service Ace on her first serve to make the score 13-11 in favor of K-State. The Sooners regrouped and split the next two points to make the score 14-12. On a play at the net on the next point, K-State reached over the net to drive the volleyball straight down to potentially win the game. As soon as the call was made and the apparent 5th set victory 15-12, Coach Mansfield was asking for a review with a challenge that the K-State player was across the net to play the ball on the play. The review proved to be true and OU was awarded the point to make the score 13-14 instead of 12-15.

Sydney Thompson entered to serve for the Sooners and promptly picked up her 2nd service ace of the match to tie the score at 14-14. Taylor Preston then nailed down the victory with two straight kills to give OU the set 16-14 and more importantly, the Match. The Sooners won despite their 9 errors to KpState's 6 errors. But OU won behind 10 Kills and 2 Service Aces vs K-State's 5 Kills and 0 service aces.

IMO, the five set reverse sweep of the last three sets and win while coming back from a deficit late in the 5th sets will mean alot for the Sooners. I think last night's win will possibly turn the Sooners around and give the Sooners new life starting tonight as they play Kansas State again on Friday evening.

Through 2 sets the Sooners had served 35 times with 25 serves in-play with 2 more as service aces. OU had 8 errors in those 35 serves for only a 77% of serves being in play. In the last three sets, the Sooners 64 times with 7 aces and 7 errors. That is 50 serves in plus the 7 aces for a 89% serve-in %. That is a significant improvement for the serving game for OU.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the Sooner comeback win with a bit of Sooner Magic included.

The win is being reported as the 100th win of Coach Mansfield's career and the win came against his brother and with his family in attendance as well. Congratulations to Coach Mansfield and to the Sooners Women that broke through to win their first Big 12 match in 2023.

The second match of the 2-day DHer will start at 6 PM tonight at McCasland. Hopefully, the Sooners will take some quick momentum into the first set and OU will start quickly and run to another win tonight.

Good luck tonight to the Sooner.

Well, as happy as I was leaving McCasland Field House on Thursday night, I was not so happy leaving on Friday night. The Sooners were unable to pick up their second win in a row against Kansas State as they dropped three straight sets to the Wildcats by the scores of 23-25, 18-25 and 15-25. Honestly, the Sooners just did not seem sharp on Friday night in their back-to-back match.

In the first set, the Sooners let K-State get out to a 4-0 and a 6-3 lead in the set. The Sooners rallied to take leads of 12-9, 14-12 and 19-16 in the middle of the set. At that 19-16 point in the first set, OU was playing fairly well. After a Kill by Lydia Burts the score was 21-19 with the ball in OU's hands serving. But K-State won four straight points on an OU service error and two OU attack errors before a service ace by K-State to make the score 21-23 in favor of K-State. After a service error by K-State and a Kill by K-State, Kelsey Carrington earned an OU point on her own Kill to make the score 23-24 On the OU serve, K-State picked up a final Kill for K-State to win the set 25-23. The set was similar to many sets this season for the Sooners where they play well and make a couple of mistakes near the end of the set to end up on the losing side. Those 4 straight points by K-State at 21-19 really hurt the Sooners.

The second set started out played evenly. After the tie score of 13-13, K-State outplayed the Sooners and won the set outscoring the Sooners 12-5 over the final half of the set. K-State had 9 Kill points in that stretch of points to win 25-18.

the third set started poorly for the Sooners as they let Kanas State run out to a 9-1 lead. OU closed the gap to 4-9 and then 9-14 on a Kill by Alexis Shelton. But K-State ran off 6 straight points to take a commanding lead of 20-9 over the Sooners. OU tried to climb the mountain of the 11 point lead as they won 6 of the next 10 points to trail 15-24 but a K-State Kill closed out the set and the match to win 25-15.

It seems that the Sooners really wear down in back--to-back nights of play. I think Chamberlain's knee does not allow her the same movement on the second night. Shelton also has a right hand injury right now. But even with that being said, the Wildcats outplayed the Sooners on Friday night. Especially with their athleticism. K-State is a smaller team who jumps well and plays very good defense with very few receive errors and many successful digs. To emphasis that defense, the Wildcats had no (0) receive errors with 37 digs on Friday night. Oklahoma had 8 receive errors and only 28 digs. The K-State defense keeps them in the set.

The Sooners record in the Big 12 conference is now 1-8 and 7-11 overall.

The Sooners will have to rebound quickly as they play Tulsa at McCasland on Tuesday night (Oct 24) at 6 PM on Cancer Awareness Night. Wear Pink if you have it.

Tulsa is 11-10 overall and 4-6 in their conference.
