OU Sooner Women's Soccer travel to Houston for 1 PM Match Today!

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The 1-0-1 Oklahoma Sooners Women's Soccer Team travels to Houston, TX for a match with the Cougars on Sunday at 1 PM. Houston is 0-2 in conference and is 6-3-1 for the season. The Sooners are 5-4-1 for the season.

OU has tied Kansas 2-2 and has defeated Kansas State 2-0 with both games in Norman at John Crain Field. Houston has lost at Texas Tech 0-3 and at home against UCF 0-1.

The road game for the Oklahoma Sooners could be a key match for OU as the Sooners are 0-4 on the road this season while only scoring 1 goals in those four matches. At home the Sooners have scored 27 goals in 6 games. Houston is on a bit of a skid in their last 3 matches as they are 0-3 and have been outscored 0 to 5. In their first 7 matches of the season, the Cougars were 6-0-1 as they outscored their opponents 28-7.

Here is the staff writers article about the Sooners trip to Houston to play.

It will be interesting to see if Michelle Pak can play today after being helped off the pitch on Thursday late in the game with an apparent ankle or leg issue. If Pak cannot play, I think that Galakhutle/Parkhurst or maybe Matise and Pappas could be called on to play more minutes in the midfield today. Replacing Pak's high level play will be tough for OU to accomplish today.

After living in Houston for 40+ years it is going to be hot and humid in what is downtown-ish Houston today. It looks like mid 90's with that thick air. I think the substitutes play and their relief of the starters will be important today. Playing 75 minutes plus today will take a toll on a player. It is a different heat in Houston than in Norman.

Good luck to the Sooners today. They could use a nice win today on the road. Their next two matches are against two teams who are 4-0 combined in the Big 12 this season, Tech on the road and UCF at home.

TCU (1-0-1) at West Virginia (1-1-0) - TCU needs to pick up a road win at WV.
Kansas (0-1-1) at UCF (2-0-0) - Kansas needs a win badly but UCF may be the better team. UCF favored.
Kansas State (0-1-1) at Oklahoma State (2-0-0) - OSU should pick up win #3 at home.
Texas Tech (2-0-0) at Baylor (0-2-0) - Baylor needs to pick up a point somehow but Tech looks good. Tech is favored I think.

Monday Play:
BYU (1-0-1) at Texas (1-1-0) - Big game between what might be the two best Big 12 teams. BYU in Austin's downtown heat is a key to the game. I will take BYU just because they are not Texas.

The Oklahoma Sooners to Houston and picked up am important win on Sunday 2-1 over the Cougars in the heat of SE Texas. Reportedly it was over 100 on the field on the campus of Houston University. The win by the Sooners a few non-winning streaks for the Sooners.

1. It was the first come-from-behind win when trailing at the half this season and the first since October 20, 2022 against TCU when the Sooners won 2-1 after trailing 1-0 at the half.
2. It was the first road win of the season for the Sooners and the first of Coach Mott's leadership.
3. It was the first win on the road since September 22, 2022 when the Sooners defeated Baylor in Waco 2-0.

The wind was a factor in the game as the Cougars had the win at their backs in the first half and the Sooners picked up the wind in the second half. The wind dictated who could keep the ball in the offensive end in the two halfs. One advantage the Sooners had though was the ability to kick the ball deep into the pitch by the Sooner GK, Sierra Giorgio. She was able to kick the ball back past midfield on both halfs.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the win in Houston on Sunday.

Coach Matt Mott was very happy and complimentary to the Sooner players after the game. "That was a really gutsy, gritty performance from our team," head coach Matt Mott said after the win. "It was so hot out here, and with the obstacles of traveling and playing in a tough environment, I'm just so proud of the way they fought. To come back from down a goal is great, and I thought we played great in the second half which gave us the result we came for."

The Sooners were down a starting player also in the match as Michelle Pak was in a walking boot on her right foot. Escalante Galekhutle took her spot in the starting lineup, which would prove to be a key in the match. In the first half the Sooners were on defense most of the time facing the wind, but they did have two good scoring opportunities. One was when Emma Hawkins had the ball on the edge of the box on the left side. After a move, she moved to her right and kicked the ball at the crossbar with some drop on the ball and the Houston GK barely punched the ball up into the top side of the crossbar to bounce over the goal. The other was when Hadley Murrell had the ball in the open on the left side of the goal but with no Sooner running down the middle, Murrell hd to take the shot from a deep angle and the shot was over the goal.

Houston scored in the 12th minute of the first half on a 30-ish yard kick from the right-center area of the pitch by Kizer of Houston. It was a bending shot right to left as it evaded Giorgio just high enough and off the left post of the goal into the back of the goal. The Sooners left Kizer all alone with no Sooner defender near the shooter as she ran forward with the ball. Both teams had 5 shots in the first half. with 3 saves by the GKers. Oklahoma had 4 corner kicks to Houston's 1.

In the second half, the Sooners pushed the ball forward relentlessly against Houston. The forward play finally paid off in the 74th minute on one of the six corner kicks the Sooners had in the 2nd half. Muriel Kroflin lifted the kick into the center of the smaller box that was punched out to the right by the Houston GK. The ball deflected out to the left of the goal where a Houston defender and Emma Hawkins played for the ball. Hawkins quickly gained the ball and left-footed it in the middle of the box low on the ground through an open alley. Galekhutle advanced on the ball going forward and one-touched the ball directly into the goal passed the GK for the tying score.

In the 82nd minute of the game, OU defender Andie Wolfe gained control of the ball in the midfield. She made a nice looping pass to her sister Dani Wolfe over the defense on the left edge of the box. Dani Wolfe did a great job of not being offside and still outrunning two Houston defenders to play the ball. The older Wolfe sister one-touched the bouncing ball with the outside of her right foot to kick the ball to the right of the Houston GK into the right side of the goal net for the score. It was a very nice play on the ball by Dani Wolfe.

The heat was a factor had to go deeper into the bench than they have been and one deeper due to Pak's injury. OU played 18 players in the match. Seven players extedned their play to at least 77 tough minutes in the heat. The 3 defenders, Callie England, Andie Wolfe and Cassie Clifton all played 90 minutes with a bit of break in the second half with the wind at their back. Outside halfs, Hadley Murrell and Alexis Washington played 77 and 79 minutes with lots of running up and down the pitch. Muriel Krolin logged 80 minutes in the midfield with Hawkins playing 83 minutes at forward. Ella Pappas logged 73 minutes off the bench playing all over the field as a substitute.

I thought Kroflin, Murrell, Washington, Hawkins, Clifton, England and Giorgio all played very well. The important road win kept the Sooners unbeaten in the Big 12 play with a 2-0-1 record and one of six unbeaten teams in conference play.

Congrats to the Sooners on their win. It will be a tough recovery as the Sooners travel back to Norman after the game as they try to re-hydrate fully and to rest those legs this week before they travel to Lubbock for a Thursday match at 7 PM. It looks like the weather will be in 80's at game time on Thursday in the Lubbock dry heat that is always present out there.

I finished watching the second half of the previous game. Pak was in a lot of pain. I thought maybe she had broken her ankle. Her being in a walking boot is a good sign I think.
