This is a very interesting (to me) development. My first question is what caused this/these changes to come about?

The NLI penalty is the loss of one season of competition in all sports and a required one year in residence at the next NLI institution. (This happens if your school does not grant a complete release from the NLI.)

One other change, per source: Four-year transfers will also be able to sign an NLI after entering the portal. They don’t have to do this, but signing an NLI would trigger a recruiting ban.

So, once you sign it, other schools are supposed to stop reaching out.

These changes come from the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), which has overseen the NLI program for nearly 60 years. They take effect for prospective student-athletes signing 2024-25 NLIs.
