Greg Hurwitz latest novel about Evan Smoak is in my humble opinion, his very best writing to date, and has my highest recommendation.
He has become my favorite writer, and Evan Smoak has supplanted Joe Pike as my favorite fictional character. That's saying a lot, because when I wore younger mans clothes I was Joe Pike.
Hurwitz has mastered the ability to convey action scenes, while steadily progressing with character development and profound human insight.
Antihero is in the middle of the dark seamy side of life. It's ugly and gritty and borders on depravity of the worst kind. X is deeply shaken and changed by his latest endeavor.
The conflict is between 2 sides of himself as he tries to navigate protection and vengeance, with justice and a cold slap in the face of mercy, when ruthlessness is where he's always lived.
There is finally a hookup with Candy, another peer from the Orphan program, and the reappearance of Mia and her son Peter.
Mia forces Evan to face himself and his part with and in community. .
It's a sort of revisiting of what his trainer and mentor Jack attempted to show him. How to be a cold as steel & ice water killer, but still maintain his humanity.
GREAT READ!!!
If you've been following this series, don't miss this one. It is superb writing.
