Sooner T&F Members at NCAA West Regional in Arkansas May 22-25

Thirty-four (34) members of the Oklahoma Sooners have qualified for the NCAA West Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas starting today, May 22nd through the 25th. Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the Sooners that have qualified.

Ten (10) individual women for the Sooners plus the 4x100 and the 4x400 Relay teams have qualified for the West Regional. Sixteen (16) individual Men plus the 4x400 Relay team have qualified for the West Regional.

Good luck to the Sooners the next four days in Fayetteville.

Here are the Sooners that have advanced to the Regional Finals:
  • Nikaoli Williams (long jump) recorded a leap of 7.99m (26'2.75") for third place.
  • Anthony Riley (long jump), registered 7.81m (25'7.50") for sixth place to qualify.
  • Diego Trevino (shot put) needed only one toss to punch his ticket to the championships, registering 19.13m (62'9.25") on his first attempt.
  • Bayley Campbell (hammer throw) competed late into the night, securing ninth in the hammer throw with a 66.97m (219'8") mark.
  • Freshman Dominic Serem automatically qualified for the 1,500m quarterfinal after finishing third in his heat, clocking in at 3:42.83. Serem will race at 5:15 p.m. on Friday for a chance to earn a lane in Eugene.
  • Jasmine Akins (long jump), posted an all-conditions personal record of 6.57m (21'6.75") (+3.7) for eighth place.
  • Olivia Lueking (pole vault) cruised to her top-12 height, clearing each of her three attempts without fail. By qualifying, she has now made six straight indoor and outdoor national championship appearances. Akins stood in 14th place going into her third and final jump after recording 6.45m on her first attempt and fouling her second. She stepped up to the challenge, using a wind-aided leap to register the qualifying mark that boosted her eighth place.
  • Tuane Silver (shot put) qualified for the championships after finishing in the top-12 of the shot put. Silver also improved her position on OU's all-time outdoor list, moving up from No. 9 to No. 6.
Action continues on Friday with events moved up two hours due to weather.

Two more Sooners qualified for the NCAA Finals in the preliminary action on Friday.

Freshman Kyren Washington cleared five heights before approaching his qualifying mark of 2.20m (7'2.50"), and leaped over the bar on his first attempt for fifth place. The freshman tied the third-best jump in Oklahoma outdoor history to secure his spot on the national stage. On his first attempt, Green registered 16.23m (53'3") and cruised through his remaining jumps with ease. He placed second overall to clinch his spot at the national meet.

Sophomore BJ Green qualified in the triple jump. On his first attempt, Green registered 16.23m (53'3") and cruised through his remaining jumps with ease. He placed second overall to clinch his spot at the national meet.

The women's squad returns to the track on Saturday for the final day of west preliminaries. The Sooners will compete in the discus, 4x100 and 4x400 relays and the triple jump.

At the end of the NCAA West Regionals, the Oklahoma Sooners send 11 athletes to the NCAA Finals in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8 to compete for a national title in their respective events at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
