Sooner Women's Tennis Starts Big 12 Tourney at 3 PM vs Houston

The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Tennis Team starts the Big 12 Tournament today in Stillwater at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center. Oklahoma finished in 3rd Place in the Big 12 behind OSU (1st) and Texas (2nd). The Sooners open play today versus Houston who finished in 14th Place in the Big 12. Oklahoma defeated Houston 4-0 in Houston earlier this season.

The #18 ranked Sooners won their match with Houston with a 4-0 shutout. they now advance to the next round of the Big 12 Tourney to play Baylor who won 4-2 over West Virginia. Oklahoma defeated Baylor 4-0 last week in Waco.

The win was keyed by another Double Point win with the #2 and #3 teams both winning their matches while the #1 team dropped their match. The #2 Doubles Team of Garcia Ruiz and Safarova won their match quickly with a 6-0 win. At the #1 court, Guzman and Gilheany was surprised by the strong play of the Hosuton duo as they dropped their match 6-2. When they played in the conference matchup, Guzman and Gilheany won their match against the Houston #1s 6-4. The Double point was then left up to a new pairing for the Sooners for the #3 Team Noel was matched with Shcherbinina. The Sooners won their match at 7-5 after holding an early lead and then winning the last two games for the match and the Doubles Point.

With the Doubles point in hand, the Sooners needed just 3 wins in the singles matches to move on in the tourney. Alina Shcherbinina, won her second match of the day for Oklahoma as she won 6-1, 6-2 in the #3 spot. Chloe Noel matched Shcherbinina with her second win as she won her match at the #5 spot 6-1, 6-4. Emma Staker, playing the #6 spot for Oklahoma, then won the match for Oklahoma as she won 6-1, 6-2. In the three remaining singles matches, Oklahoma led in all three with Julia Garcia Ruiz, Dana Guzman and Florencia Urrutia all winning their first set and being up or tied in the second set when play was stopped.

The #18 Oklahoma Sooners defeated the #36 Baylor Bears 4-0 in the second round of action in the Big 12 Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday. It was the second straight 4-0 win for the Sooners in the tournament.

As they usually do, the Sooners won the Doubles point as the Sooners won on Court 2 and Court 3 and were leading on Court 1 when the Doubles were halted. On the 2nd court, Garcia Ruiz and Safarova for Oklahoma won 6-1. On the 3rd court, Noel and Shcherbinina won 6-2 to give the Sooners the Doubles point. On the 1st court, Guzman and Gilheany was leading 5-3 when OU won the point.

In singles, the Sooners needed 3 wins and got them quickly. Alina Shcherbinina won her singles match at #3 in two sets, 6-1, 6-1. Emma Straker, at #6, won 6-2, 6-0 to bring the Sooners to within on point of the win. Guzman provided that point with her 6-1, 6-3 win in the #2 match. That was the match with Oklahoma winning 4-0.

When the match was won by OU, the three remaining singles matches all had leads in their matches. Garcia Ruiz was leading 6-4, 3-1 in the #1 match. Urrutia, playing #4 singles, was leading 6-4, 2-4. Noel was in the 3rd set in the #5 match, 6-1, 3-6 and 2-1.

In other action at the Big 12, Texas defeated Kansas State 4-0. Oklahoma will play Texas in the semifinals today (Friday) at 6 PM. On the other side of the bracket, Oklahoma State won 4-1 over UCF while Texas Tech won 4-0 over BYU. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech will play today in their half of the semifinals (Friday) at 6 PM also. The two winners will play for the Big 12 Championship on Saturday at 6 PM.

The #18-ranked and #3 seed Oklahoma Sooner Women's Tennis Team challenged the #7 ranked and #2 seed Texas Women's Tennis Team on Friday in the Big 12 Tourney Semi-Finals match last night at 6 PM. The match started well as the Sooners won the Double Point before dropping four of the six Singles matches in their match.

The Doubles Point was won by the Sooners as Garcia Ruiz/Safarova playing in the #2 spot won their match 6-1 over Texas. In the #3 match, Noel/Shcherbinina won their match at 6-4 for the Point in the doubles matches to give the Sooners the 1st point of the match.

In Singles play, Texas opened the door by winning four of the six first sets in the singles matches. Texas followed that with three wins in Singles in the 5th, 4th and 3rd matches as Noel, Urrutia and Shcherbinina dropped their matches in two straight sets. Emma Straker won the next point for the Sooners as she rebounded from a 0-6 loss in the first set to win 6-2, 6-3 in three sets for the Sooners. The Sooners then trailed 3-2 in the match. In the decisive match, Garcia Ruiz in the #1 singles match dropped her match 6-7 (7-1), 6-4 as Texas won the match 4-2 with four wins in the singles. In the final Singles match, Guzman was ahead in her match 2-6, 6-3, 5-1.

Earlier in the year the Match in Austin was a 4-3 win by Texas as the two teams played to very close matches.

Texas moves on to play Oklahoma State (#1 seeded) who won their Semi-Final Match over Texas Tech 4-0.

The Sooners Team will await their NCAA Regional assignment which will be determined on April 29th. As a Top 20 team and 19th ranked, the Sooners should surely be in the NCAAs. The Sooners finished the spring season at 18-6 in matches. All six matches were to Top 20 ranked teams.
