Oklahoma Baseball vs West Virginia this Weekend - Simple Review

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooners host the West Virginia Mountaineers in a 3-game series this weekend on Friday at 7 PM CST, Saturday at 4 PM CST and Sunday at Noon CST. all games will be at L Dale Mitchell Park. The Oklahoma Sooners are 6-0 in big 12 play and 13-7 overall. The West Virginia Mountaineers are 2-1 in the Big 12 and 12-9 overall.

Here is the stat comparison of the two teams:
OU: .309 BA, ..407 OB%, .472 Slug%, 7.3 R/G, 36 doubles, 8 triples and 19 HRs, 5.07 ERA, .259 BAA .366 OB% Against. and .412 Slug% Against, 27 errors for a .963 Fielding%.
WV: .270 BA, .377 OB%, .444 Slug%, 6.61 R/G, 35 doubles, 1 triple and 28 HRs, 4.60 ERA, .235 BAA, .357 OB% Against and ..356 Slug% Against, 18 errors for a .976 Fielding%.

Oklahoma hits better and steals a few more bases, but West Virginia has more power, pitches better and fields better. But I will say that OU has only given up 20 runs in Big 12 play in 6 games to what people thought were good teams. That is 3.33 runs/game. Maybe OU's weekend pitchers are better than their weekday pitchers. Or at least they have been through two conference series.

I would like to think that Oklahoma can win 2 of 3 this weekend. but most Big 12 series depend on pitching. The team that pitches better, usually wins the series and usually the game. First time someone ever said that.....

Here are the current Big 12 Standings for Baseball:

Oklahoma 6-0
Houston 4-2
Kansas State 2-1 - They play 3 at Houston on F, S, S.
Texas 2-1
West Virginia 2-1 - They play 3 at Oklahoma on F, S, S.
Cincinnati 2-1 - They play at St. Louis in non-conference play on F, S, S.
Kansas 3-3
BYU 3-3 - They play at Texas Tech on Th, F, S.
UCF 2-4 - They play at Kansas on F, S, S.
Texas Tech 2-4
Baylor 2-4 - They play at Texas on F, S, S.
Oklahoma State 1-2
TCU 1-5 - They play at OSU on F, S, S.

Sooners take Game 1 on a combined No-Hitter by Braden Davis and Reid Hensley. OU won 13-0. Davis pitched 7 innings, striking out 12, and fanning the last 8 batters he faced. Talk about total dominance!

The Oklahoma Sooners Baseball Team got a great effort on the mound and had 10 hits with 4 doubles and 12 walks on offense to plate 13 runs in a 13-0 shutout of West Virginia.

That great effort on the mound was a two-man team no-hitter with 15 Ks and 3 walks. Braden Davis pitched 7 innings allowing just 2 walks with 12 Ks and Reid Hensley pitched the final 2 innings with 3 Ks and 1 walk to complete the no-hitter effort for the Sooners. Great game by those two hurlers.

On offense, the Sooners made the most of doubles with 6 RBIs from them (Pettis had a 3-RBI double in the 5th). The other three RBI doubles were by Snyder, Mackenzie and Mulder. (There were no spotting of aliens at L Dale Mitchell Park last night.) Snyder, Nicklaus and Mackenzie each had two hits. Carmichael reached base 4 times with a single and 3 walks. Nicklaus and Mackenzie also reached base 4 times on 2 hits and 2 walks. Pettis had 4 RBIs on the night with Snyder adding 3 and Mackenzie adding 2.

It was good win for the Sooners as they are now 7-0 in the Big 12.

Here is the Sooner staff writers article about the win on Friday night.

The Oklahoma Sooners Baseball team had their armor chinked a bit on Saturday as they dropped a DH to the West Virginia Mountaineers by the scores of 9-5 and 8-3 to drop their first Big 12 series of the 2024 season. After OU winning Friday's game 13-0 with a no-hit shutout, West Virginia found their bats and put up 17 runs against the Sooners with 2 doubles and 6 HRs in the DH. OU managed to score 8 runs on just two doubles for EBH.

The Sooner are now 7-2 in conference play but still in a good position and likely still in first place or maybe tied for first place overall. The Sooners are now 14-9 overall. West Virginia raised their conference record to 4-2 and 14-9 overall.

The best pitching effort for the Sooners on Saturday was by Kyson Witherspoon who threw 7.2 innings of relief and just gave up 1 run with 1 hit, 11 Ks and 2 walks. That is a superior effort by him in Game #2. In Game #1 Brad Pruett and Dylan Crooks threw three innings of scoreless relief.

In the batter's box, Madron and Carmichael led the Sooners with 4 hits apiece as Madron added 3 RBIs with a double and Carmichael adding 3 RBIs also. Mackenzie wias the only other Sooner with more than 1 hit as he tallied 2 hits.

Here is the Sooner sports writers article about the Sooners play on Saturday.

Oklahoma returns to action Tuesday at home vs. in-state foe Oral Roberts. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be seen via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and heard locally in Oklahoma on SportsTalk 1400 AM/99.3 FM or nationwide on The Varsity app. Live stats can be found at OUStats.com. The Sooners will host Lamar for a 3-game series outside of conference play next weekend at L Dale Mitchell Park.

Good luck this week to the Sooners!
