A look at UT-Arlington: Sooner Softball plays Wed Nite @ Love's!

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The 27-1 Oklahoma Sooners will host UT-Arlington in Love's Field for a single game on Wednesday night in a 6 PM first pitch game. UT-Arlington is 10-16 on the season but is 7-3 in their last 10 games. The Oklahoma Sooners have won their last 9 games in a row.

UT-Arlington's record indicates a problem somewhere. The pitching staff seems to me most of the problem. The Team ERA is 5.45. Of their 160.2 innings pitched 118.0 innings has been pitched with a pitcher who has a current ERA of over 6.00. Ouch! The only pitcher of the five that has pitched that has an ERA under 6.00 is Jessica Adams. She has thrown 42.2 innings (more than all of the Sooner pitchers except for Maxwell) with a 2.79 ERA and she only has 3 unearned runs allowed. So she is a decent pitcher allowing 3.28 runs per 7 innings. Adams is the only UT-Arlington pitcher that has less hits allowed than innings pitched and she has a .236 BAA. The team has a BAA of .298. The staff allows an EBH every 2.1 innings. They also allow about 1 free base every 2 innings by a walk or a HB.

The Mavericks have committed 28 errors for a .961 fielding percentage but have only given up 16 unearned runs on those 28 errors.

Offensively, the Mavericks has a batting line of .292 BA, .351 OB% and a .402 Slug%. They have hit only 23 doubles, 5 triples and 13 HRs while scoring 100 runs for 3.84 Runs/G. Their two best hitters are #10 3B - Corona (.403 BA, .443 OB% and .458 Slug%) and #27 1B - Franklin (.389 BA, .464 OB% and .611 Slug%). #88 CF/C - Neises was the WAC Player of the Week for their conference this last week. She is hitting .303 BA, .309 OB% and .485 Slug%. three other hitters hit above .292 BA but that is about among batters that have 1 at bat per game.

The Sooners pitch much better, that is not strong enough, the Sooners REALLY pitch much better with their 1.26 ERA Every Sooner has an ERA under 1.54. The Sooners fielding, while not being quite what we have come to appreciate, is still good with 10 errors and a .985 fielding percentage. The offense is very productive at 9.04 Runs per game and 11.79 Runs/7 IP. If you add the EBH for Parker, Pickering, Boone, Ludlam, Torres, Hodge and Coor together, the seven Sooners total the EBH bases that Ut-Arlington has produced. That means that Jennings, Brito, Coleman, Hansen and Sanders (with Bland and Lilio also) provide the offensive difference for the Sooners over UT-Arlington.

I sounds like the the Sooners will be heavily favored on Wednesday night. The Mavericks RPI value is 132 compared to the 5 value held by OU. Remember the RPI is not a ranking of a teams ability or how good they are, it is only a ranking of the strength of the teams they have played using a weighted formula.

The weather looks nice for Wednesday night with a high on Wednesday in the middle 70s but there is a chance of rain late in the evening (after midnight).

Good luck to the Sooners on Wednesday night.

Boomer Sooner!

Here are my final thoughts about Wednesday night's Sooner Softball game against UT-Arlington at PM.

1) I know it is a church night, but I hope we see a good crowd tonight for the game. I think Coach Gasso said it is not quite a sellout at the Tuesday presser.

2) With the good news about Kinzie Hansen (a thing with her knee) and no news about Riley Ludlam's throwing hand fingers, I would like to see this tonight to ease into this period of time of caution with Hansen.

A) I would like to see Hansen participate in warmup drills (stretching, running and throwing to warm her arm up). I hope she might be able to take a couple of pitches in the bullpen as well.
B) I would like to see Ludlam start with Torres being able to catch an inning or two before the game is over.
C) For the icing on the cake, maybe see Hansen in a pinch hit appearence, get a hit, then be replaced by a runner.

3) As for who starts tonight against UT-Arlington in the circle - (I failed miserably last week in the DH against Tarleton State thinking it would be Deal and Keeney when it was Maxwell and May) - I think it will be Deal. Might as well go down with the ship again. I think Deal just needs innings even if it just 3 innings a a time. I would also like to see SJ Geurin in the circle tonight.

I do not think we see many differences with regard to Torres being the 3rd string catcher now in play. she can still start at 2B and then move to catcher if needed. But if Hodge has replaced Torres at 2B, as we have seen, Lilio will need to be available to go into the game if Torres re-enters to move to catcher with Lilio taking Ludlam's spot probably. Starting Hodge makes that a bit easier, which will probably happen some as well.

I think the offense is in a pretty good place right now. I hope the hitting continues as my goal for the team is always 10 hits and frequent crooked letters on the scoreboard. The Sooners offensive walk-to-strikeout ratio of 141 walks and 9 HBP to 68 Ks is looking better all the time. The ratio is 2.21 free bases to every K. That is a strong number and like the typical Sooner offense.

Good luck to the team tonight against UT-Arlington.

I am also hoping Deal gets the start tonight....and agree that she needs to get as many innings as she can.
While I would love to see Geurin in a relief role as well, I really think that might fall to Monticelli.
And yes, it would be good for Torres just to get some in game reps behind the plate, just dust off the rust, if nothing else. Without looking at the schedule, I don't know how many more of these kind of games we have left on our schedule, so if we are going to do any last minute experimenting, with catcher or anywhere else, this would probably be it.
I think the Tulsa game just got elevated to a "real deal" kind of game after last night's win over the Cowgirls. However, I'm not sure if that tells me they are better than I thought? Or the cowgirls are worse than I thought? Probably a little of both, I guess.

I agree about the Tulsa game in OKC at Hall of Fame on April 16th. It has been elevated because of both reasons.

Pitching Comparison - I changed K/IP to K/7IP so that the numbers represented a wider range and it would be easier to differentiate between players

I tried to tune in on the Franchise internet radio, but it says "An internal error has occurred." The game was scheduled to start 6 minutes ago.

I found another way to receive it.(I originally clicked on the Franchise 2 links on the OU softball schedule from soonersports.com, which had the error message) That error message never happened before by accessing the broadcast that way.
