Current Hitting Stats

Post by AustinTXSooner »

This is a quick look at how our hitters are doing before we start the conference schedule. This is sorted by OPS, which is simply OBP+SLG. For those unfamiliar, OPS is a quick and easy way to measure a hitter's effectiveness with one number. Is it perfect? No. But it's way better than AVG, which is usually what you see on TV. The theory behind it is that OBP measures a hitter's ability to not make an out. SLG measures a hitter's ability to move runners around the bases. Those are the two most important components for scoring runs. The beauty of it is that you generally don't need a spreadsheet to calculate OPS, although that's what I used here.

The "sample size" is still low enough that a good or bad streak has a significant impact on the numbers. That will start to even out as we move through the season.

The raw numbers are from: https://stats.ncaa.org/team/522/stats?g ... y_id=15060

The expectations of OU fans would probably be 1.000 or higher. But we often play teams that have starters with a .600 OPS or less. Iowa St has a catcher that's started 10 games with a .246 OPS. Spelhaug, who has been their leadoff hitter the last couple of years, has a .719 OPS. As a team, Iowa St has a .907 OPS

Last year, Erin Coffel from Kentucky led the NCAA with 1.605. Skylar Wallace was 2nd with a 1.575 and Taryn Kern was 3rd with a 1.520. I haven't found anyone else above 1.500. That means that Brito's numbers are really good so far. So are Jennings.
