The Sooners have now had two consecutive posted scores of 197.850 and 197.900 in the first two weekends. Both scores were very close to the difference making 198.00 scores that the Sooners shoot for each on event.

Here are the Sooner staff writers article about the Sooner win.

The Sooners placed four gymnasts in all four events in an unusual placing. Senior Audrey Davis came in second in the all-around with a 39.625, followed by sophomore Faith Torrez with a 39.600. Senior Katherine LeVasseur set a career-high with a 39.525 in the all-around and junior Jordan Bowers finished with a 39.400. Bowers also shared the beam title with a 9.950.

Two freshman Hannah Scheible and Keira Wells performed on the opening device, the Vault. Scheible set a career high with a 9.925 on her front pike half in the No. 2 spot. Wells notched a career high 9.875 on a beautiful 1.5. Davis started the Sooners off strong with a 9.85 on her Yurchenko 1.5. Anchoring was Torrez with a 9.9. LeVasseur added a 9.9 in the No. 3 spot, followed by a 9.725 from Bowers. The Sooners score on the Vault was 49.450 and led the event after the first rotation.

The Sooners earned a 49.450 on bars to lead with a 98.900 at the halfway point. Danielle Sievers made her season debut with a 9.875 in the leadoff spot. LeVasseur and Torrez each earned 9.85s, with Torrez nailing her double layout dismount. In the No. 4 spot, senior Ragan Smith put up a 9.9. Davis was the highlight of the rotation, nailing her dismount and showing off her sky-high piked jaeger for a near-perfect 9.975. Anchoring was Bowers with a 9.850.

OU pushed its lead further in the third rotation with a 49.500 on beam for a 148.425. Davis started the third rotation with a stunning routine and a stuck dismount for a 9.9 as the new leadoff for the Sooners. Wells (FR) was steady in the No. 2 spot for a 9.850. Jordan Bowers was elegant and crisp on the beam, showing off a strong series and a stuck dismount for a 9.950. Torrez stuck her new dismount for a 9.925, followed by another stick a 9.9 from LeVasseur. Smith came off the beam on her series for a 9.375.

OU closed out the meet with a 49.475 on the floor to earn the win. Davis led off her third event of the day with a 9.9, followed by the Sooner debut of senior Soraya Hawthorne (XFER from Georgia) for a 9.825. Smith rebounded from her fall on beam with a stuck double tuck and double layout for a 9.9 in the No. 3 spot. LeVasseur showed off her incredible full-in for her opening pass for a 9.875. Faith Torrez nailed her sky-high double layout for a 9.95 in the No. 5 spot. Anchoring with an incredible double-pike was Bowers with a 9.875.

Danae Fletcher, who usually performs for the Sooners in one or two events, was seen on crutches on the sidelines during the telecast.

All-in-all, the Sooners performed very well despite not as many stuck landings that the Sooners pride themselve on. The full development of the Sooner team is still ongoing and yet, they have posted two very good scores in their first two matches with easy wins in both events.

The Sooners will head to Denver for their last road trip of the month. OU will face Big 12 rival Denver, UCLA and Stanford inside Magness Arena on Sunday, Jan. 21, at 3 p.m. CT.

The Sooners have posted 2 great “away” event scores - very nearly the “198.0” score that marks a team competing for the national title. More importantly, they’ve seen several of the best in the NCAA field - Michigan, UCLA, LSU, Utah, Michigan state and Kentucky. Further, while not on the floor at the same time, Alabama, auburn, cal and ucla were also at the Mean Girl super 16 - likely scored by same judges.

None of these other teams have approached the 198 mark - posting scores well below (~.750) the Sooners. The Sooners are functioning very close to “peak”, with minor deductions here and there. Only major chink so far was Regan’s fall on Beam yesterday. I recall only a couple of other sub-9.8 scores. All in all, a very promising early season.

The “away” status is important - as the rankings are based on NQS, which is the top 5 (or 6?) meet scores, at least 3 of which must be away meets. So the Sooners already have 2 away scores near that 198 mark. The NQS also is calculated individually by event and feeds the individual NQS rankings. Not sure how much the individual rankings matter, but I do think the individual rankings do set an “expectation” in the minds of the judges as to who will post the best scores.

We started the season pretty healthy, but seems we’ve got a couple event specialists (Danielle recovering from Dec injury, and now Danae with her injury this weekend).

Still 2.5 months of season to go and lots can happen, but Sooners are in great shape and performing well.

During the broadcast yesterday, they referenced a new Utah head coach. I got curious and found this summary article. I thought others might be interested as well.
