Sooners dominate NCTC Lions in mismatch on Monday Evening - 37-0

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma had a nice practice last night against the JUCO North Central Texas College @ Gainesville on Monday night as the score mounted to a total of 37-0 through 8 inning of Oklahoma batting and 10 innings worth of NCTC batting. The Lions did not ever quit though and were trying to make plays and get hits all night against the Sooners. Give the Lions credit for that, for sure. Their bus arrived a little before 4 PM yesterday and as they walked by the already substantial crowd waiting to enter the gates, the OU fans applauded the Lions as they walked by.

I will not go into great detail on this one, but I will have the "correct stats" that I logged at the game.

The starting lineup for the Sooners was this:

Defense: C Hansen, 1B Parker, 2B Jennings, SS Brito, 3B Torres, LF Pickering, CF Coleman, Boone RF, Lilio DP and Deal SP.

Offense: Coleman, Brito, Hansen, Jennings, Parker, Pickering, Lilio, Torres, Boone.

NCTC Top 1st: Deal threw 18 pitches in the inning, 11 for strikes. She struck out the 1st hitter in 7 pitches with 1 foul ball. Deal walked the second hitter on a 3-2 pitch. The next hitter made late contact and hit a ground ball to Parker at 1B for an out. Parker stumbled on the play and made a good recovery to field the ball and get the out. I think her clet got caught in the dirt perhaps. The walked runner moved to 2B on the play. Deal struck out the 4th hitter on three pitches.

OU Bottom of the 1st: OU had 3 hits, (1 HR) 4 walks and stolen bases in the inning as they scored 6 runs. Coleman hit a leadoff HR to RF that was hit well. Brito walk and stole 2B and moved to 3B on the catchers throwing error. Hansen walked. Jennings laid down a nie bunt to 'squeeze' Brito home and move Hansen to 2B for the second run. Hansen moved to 3B on a pitch in the dirt on an alert play by Hansen for a SB. Parker walked. Parker stole 2B. Hansen and Parker moved up a base on a passed ball, 3 runs for OU. Pickering walked. Pickering stole 2B. Lilio singled to RF with the ball bouncing off the glove of the RF. Parker and Pickering scored on the hit with Lilio moving to 3B. Only credited Lilio with 1 RBI on the play because Pickering was held at 3B, until the ball bounded away from the RF, the Pickering scored. Torres hit a ball to the left of the SS that the SS fielded and threw past 1B. The scorers gave Torres a hit, and an RBI as Lilio scored. I might have ruled it an error all the way, but maybe Torres was at 1B before the ball was and moved up to 2B on the overthrow. Boone popped up behind the plate for the second out. Torres stole 3B on a nice slide to the back of the bag. Coleman hit the ball fairly deep to LF but it was short of the fence for the 3rd out. NCTC had three errors in the inning. OU led 6-0.

NCTC Top 2nd: Same defense for OU. Deal struck out the first two hitters on 4 pitches each time. Each batter fouled off one pitch in their at bat. The 3rd hitter, RH, tried to lay down a bunt towards first base to pick up a hit. Parker charged the ball quickly and was able to field the ball and to tag the runner for the final out of the inning.

OU Bottom of the 2nd Inning: Brito led off the inning with a ground ball to ss that was once again thrown away by the SS. Brito moved to second base on the errant throw. Hansen walked. Brito and Hansen moved up a base on a wild pitch. Jennings hit a ground ball in the hole between SS and 3B for a 2-RBI single. Parker grounded out to 1B with Jennings moving to 2B. Pickering hit a deep fly ball to LF that the NCTC LF made a nice running catch on. Lilio walked. Torres popped out to 2B. On 1 hit, OU scored 2 runs with only one earned run. OU led 8-0.

NCTC Top 3rd: Same defense for OU. Deal struck out the side on 12 pitches. This was her best inning that she pitched.

Deal's Stats: 3.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 ER, 1 walk,, 7 Ks, 43 pitches with 28 strikes = 65% strikes. Deal allowed a hit ball to 1B and a bunt to 1B.

Oklahoma Bottom of 3rd: Boone led off the inning with a walk. Boone stole second base. Coleman flied out to LF. Brito also flied out to LF Hansen hit a low liner to RC that fell in for a double for Hansen and an RBI as Boone scored. Jennings singled to LF to move Hansen to 3rd Base. Parker reached first on an infield single between 3B and SS with Hansen scoring. Pickering hit a deep ball to LF that hit the wall in the air for a double with Jennings scoring and PArker moving to 3B. Lilio singled RF with the ball once again bouncing off the RF's glove a bit. Parker scored easily as the throw to home plate was not fielded well by the cutoff players which allowed Pickering to score and Lilio move to 3B. Torres followed with a strikeout to end the inning. OU scored 5 runs on 5 hits (2 doubles) with 1 walk, 1 stolen base and 1 K. OU led 13-0.

NCTC Top of the 4th: New Defense for OU: Hansen C, Parker 1B, Lilio 2B, Hodge SS, Brito 3B, Pickering LF, Coor CF, Boone RF, Ludlam DP, Geirin P. Geurin picked up an out on her first pirtch as she jammed the hitter with the hitter hitting a ground ball to 1B for the out. Geurin struck out the next two batter 9 total pitches.

Oklahoma Bottom of the 4th: New order at the plate that did not really work with the starting lineup. Boone singled to CF to lead off the inning but the ball got by the CF as Boone moved to 3B on the play. Hodge singled to the SS as she just outran the ball to 1B as Boone scored. Coor grounded out to SS for the first out. Hodge stole 3B. Brito singled to to plate Hodge. Brito stole 2B. Hansen flied out to LF for out #2. Ludlum walked. Parker singled to LF to drive in Bito and move Ludlum to 2B. Pickering singled back up the middle on a hard line drive to drive in Ludlum and move Parker to 2B. Lilio pulled a line drive down the RF line for a double and 2 RBIs as Parker and Pickering scored. Boone hit a fly ball to RF that was misplayed by the RF to reach second base with Lilio scoring. Hodge picked up another single to drive in Boone. Coor singled to the SS on a play wher eshe once outran the ball to 1B with Hodge moving to 2B. Brito walked to load the bases. Hansen walked to pickup an RBI as all runners moved up a base. Ludlum grounded out to SS for the 3rd out of the inning. OU scored 9 runs on 8 hits (1 double) with 3 walks. NCTC made two errors in the inning. OU led 22-0.

NCTC Top of the 5th: Same defense for OU. Geurin walked the leadoff hitter on a 3-2 count pitch. The next hitter bunted to sacrifice the runner to 2B but Brito at #B made a really nice play to field the bunt and get the force out at 2B. The batter reached first base on the force out. Geurin struck out the next hitter on 4 pitches for the second out. Coach Gasso came to the circle and removed Geurin to bring in Maxwell to pitch.

Geurin's stats: 1.2 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 ER, 1 walk, 3 Ks, 23 pitches with 14 strikes = 60.9% strikes. She allowed a ground out to 1B and a 5-4 force play to hitters.

Maxwell threw a strike on her first pitch as the runner on first attempted a stolen base. Hansen made a perfect throw to Hodge for the caught stealing to end the NCTC inning.

Oklahoma Bottom of the 5th: Parker lead off with a double that sliced down the LF line. Parker ran well on the double. She is faster than I thought she was. Pickering doubled on a bloop down the LF line with Parker moving to 3B. Lilio doubled to LC to plate both Parker and Pickering. Boone singled up the middle with Lilio moving to 3B. On a double steal, Boone stole 2B as Lilio scored from 3B. Hodge doubled to LC to plate Boone from 2B.Coor walked. Brito fly out to CF for the first out of the inning. Hansen popped up to shallow LF as the SS made the catch. Ludlum walked to move Coor to 2B. Parker grounded out to second base for the third out of the inning. OU scored 4 runs on 5 hits (4 doubles) and 2 walks.

OU won the first 5-inning game 26-0.

2nd Game: NCTC Top of the 1st: Same defense for OU. Maxwell got the first batter to ground out to 2B (Lilio) for the first out. Maxwell struck out the next batter on 6 pitches. That was it for Maxwell and Coach Gasso again went to the circle to remove Maxwell and to bring in Monticelli to pitch. On the change, Ludlam moved to catcher with Hansen moving to DP.

Maxwell's stats: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0 walks, 1 K. Two balls one ball was hit on a ground ball to 2B and Hansen threw out a base stealer.

With Monticelli in the circle, on a 2-2 pitch with the Sooners playing shallow in the outfield, the batter made good contact on a 2-2 pitch that was hit deep in LF, Pickering ran the ball down fairly easy to make the catch and end the inning.

Oklahoma Bottom of the 1st: Pickering hit a ball to LC for a deep HR to lead off the inning. Lilio hit a pop up to short LF where the NCTC SS made the play for the first out of the inning. Boone then hit a fly ball to LF for the 2nd out of the inning. Hodge picked up her second double of the inning to LF. NellieMac picked up her first AB of the game (with Boone prepared to run for her) and hit a deep fly ball to CF for the 3rd out of the inning. OU scored 1 run on 2 hits (HR and a double) in the inning. OU led 1-0 after the first inning.

NCTC Top of the 2nd: New defense for OU: Ludlum C, Hansen 1B, Torres 2B, Jennings SS, Lilio 3B, Hodge LF, Coleman CF, Coor RF, NellieMac at DP, Monticelli still at P. The first hitter hit a high popup to #b, where the ball popped out of Lilio's glove for the error. Monticelli struck out the next hitter on 3 pitches. On a 1-2 pitch, Monticelli hit the batter on the right wrist to move runners to 1st and 2nd. Monticelli responded with another K on 4 pitches and then added one more K on 4 pitches again to end the inning.

Oklahoma Bottom of the 2nd: Coor lead off the inning with a single. NellieMac hit a ball very hard on a line drive at the CFer. It was a single with the ball bounding away from the CF as Coor moved to 3B and Boone (running for NellieMac) moved to 2B. Coleman back in the game hitting, Hit a deep fly to CF for a SFLY to score Coor with Boone moving to 3B. Jennings flew out to shallow RF for the 2nd out. Parker walked on a 3-2 count. Ludlum flew out to CF. OU scored 2 runs on 2 hits and a SFLY and a walk. OU led 3-0.

NCTC Top of the 3rd: OU defense changed. Ludlum C, Hansen 1B, Hodge 2B, Jennings SS, Lilio 3B, Torres LF, Coleman CF and Coor RF, NellieMac DP, Monticelli P. Liiio lead of the 3rd with a double to RF where the ball just cleared the RF's glove and bounced off the top of the wall. Torres grounded out to 3B for the inning's first out. Hodge singled to RF to drive Lilio in from second base Coor walked to out runners at 1st and 2nd. NellieMac hit a big, deep HR to RC that cleared the second wall behind the bleachers for a 3-run HR. Coleman hit a ground ball to second base but reached first base safely when the batter threw the ball by first and into the dugout to move Coleman to 2B. Jennings followed with another HR that cleared both fences in nearly straight CF for 2 more runs. Parker singled to RF. Ludlum doubled to LC with Parker scoring from 1B. Ludlum moved to 3B on a wild pitch. Torres grounded out to second base to pick up an RBI as Ludlam scored. Hodge flew out to LF for the 3rd out of the inning. OU scored 8 runs on 6 hits (2 HRs and 2 doubles) with 1 walk and one error by NCTC. OU led 11-0.

NCTC Top of the 4th inning: OU Defense changed. Ludlum C, Hansen 1B, Hodge 2B, Jennings SS, Torres 3B, Lilio LF, Coleman CF, Boone RF, NellieMac DP and Monticelli at P. Monticelli struck out the first hitter on 3 pitches. She struck out the second hitter on 4 pitches. Coach Gasso went to the circle to remove Monticelli and to bring in May. On the change, Parker went to 1B for Hansen and Lilio and Hodge swapped positions with Hodge in LF and Lilio at 2B.

Monticelli's stats: 3.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 ER, 0 walks, 1 HB, 7 Ks, 44 pitches with 35 strikes = 79.5% strikes. Monticelli allowed a fly ball to LF, a popup to 3B and 2B.

May followed the switch with a K on four pitches to end the 4th inning.

OU did not bat in the bottom of the 4th.

NCTC Top of the 5th: Same defense for OU. May struck out the first hitter on 4 pitches. Then she did the same thing facing the second hitter. She lost the 3rd hitter on as she grazed the batter on an inside pitch to put her on 1B. After the batter fouled off two bunt attempts, the batter struck out swinging against May to end the game.

May's Stats: 1.1 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 ER, 0 walks, 1 HB, 4 Ks, 19 pitches with 14 strikes = 73.7% strikes. She did not allow a batter to hit a fair ball.

Oklahoma's Team Pitching Stats: 10.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 ER, 2 walks, 2 HB, 22 Ks, 145 pitches with 100 strikes = 68.97% strikes.

OU's pitchers allowed 8 balls to be hit in 10 innings of pitching with 2 of those being bunts. I know that NCTC is a JUCO and that they are not very strong, but it is hard to pitch much better than the Sooners pitched on Monday night. I was also impressed by how hard that all five pitchers threw the ball last night. They all threw the ball with plenty of velocity. Velocity is not everything, but I am not sure I knew that they all threw that hard.

I will post the offensive stats soon from the two games.

.561 BA
.648 OB%
.947 Slug%

Pickering, Hodge and Lilio all three had really big offensive games. NellieMac, Parker and Jennings were not too far behind them.

NCTC used 6 pitchers last night with 12 appearances by the six of them. Their pitching was not challenging to hit and they lacked control at times but they kept throwing the ball to the Sooners. The Sooners probably only took maybe 3 bad swings at pitches out of the hitting zone. From what I have seen in two games the only bats I am concerned about are probably Torres and maybe Ludlum. Most of the hitters are already locked in pretty well. I would like to see Parker pick up a HRs soon as well as Hansen.

Overall, I think the offense looked good last night despite the competition. OU did not in any way play down to the NCTC level. They still played Oklahoma softball from beginning to the end.

What a brutal game that was. What a shame the Sooners don’t scrimmage the Pokes, or Tulsa in the fall.
