Men's and Women's Tennis Teams open Fall Play this Weekend !

The Men's and Women's Tennis Teams open their Fall 2023 Schedule by participating individually in four tournament across the country this extended weekend representing the University of Oklahoma.

For the Women, the Sooner Tennis players will be playing in two locations.

1) The North Carolina State Ranked Spotlight Tournament in Cary, NC - Thursday, Sept 21st to Sunday, Sept 24th

2) The Milwaukee Classic in Milwaukee, WI - Friday, Sept 22nd to Monday, Sept 25th

For the Men, the Sooner Tennis players will play in two locations.

1) The Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco, CA - Thursday, Sept 21st to Sunday, Sept 24th

2) The US College Cup Invitational in Torreon, Mexico - Thursday, Sept 21st to Sunday, Sept 24th

I will have to wait until the Men's and Women's Tennis Team's preview article has been provided to share which players are playing where. I will check back later today to do so.

The Sooner Women will split between the North Carolina State Ranked Spotlight Sept. 21-24, and the Milwaukee Classic Sept. 22-25.

In the Milwaukee Classic, Juniors Emma Staker and Ava Catanzarite, Sophomore Romana Cisovska and Freshman Zdena Safarova will represent OU. Tournament draws for the Milwaukee Classic will be provided Thursday.

In the North Carolina State Ranked Spotlight, Seniors Dana Guzman and Florencia Urrutia, Junior Alina Shcherbinina and Sophomore Julia Garcia Ruiz will make the trip to Cary, N.C.

A total of 17 schools will head to North Carolina for the NC State Ranked Spotlight. All teams in the field finished last season ranked in the top 40, including 14 ranked in the top 25 and five ranked in the top 10. The competitive field also features 13 singles players ranked in the ITA preseason top 25.

Here is Thursday schedule for the OU Women:

Thursday, Sept. 21 (Doubles) - All times are CST.

4 p.m. – Guzman/Shcherbinina vs. Berankova/Christensen (Duke)
4:45 p.m. – Garcia Ruiz/Urrutia vs. Perry/Chavez (Ohio State)

Friday, Sept. 22 (Singles)

8 a.m. – Urrutia vs. Tanguilig (North Carolina)
8 a.m. – Guzman vs. No. 7 Tomase (Tennessee)
8 a.m. – Shcherbinina vs. Bilchev (Georgia Tech)
10 a.m. – Garcia Ruiz vs. No. 5-8 Tverijonaite (Arizona State)

The Oklahoma Women's Tennis Team opened their Fall play in North Carolina at the North Carolina State Ranked Spotlight Sept. 21-24. Four Sooners opened play in Doubles competition on Thursday.

Dana Guzman (Returning SR) and Alina Shcherbinina (XFER JR from Baylor) opened at 4 PM against a Doubles team from Duke. The Sooners won their match 6-2 over the Duke duo. In their match that followed at 6:30 PM, the Sooners played a duo from Texas. This time the Sooners dropped their match 5-7.

Julia Garcia Ruiz (Returning SOPH) and Florencia Urrutia (XFER SR from Kentucky) opened their play at 5:45 PM against a Double team from Ohio State. The Sooners dropped their match 5-7. In their next match the Sooners won 6-3 over a Tennessee duo.

Both Sooner Doubles team play on Sunday at 9 AM in their next Doubles match. Guzman/Shcherbinina play at due from Arizona State. Ruiz/Urrutia play a duo from South Carolina.

In Singles play today, the Sooners will start play at 9 AM.

Urrutia will play Tanguilig (North Carolina) - 9 AM - It looks like the next singles match is a 2 PM with a W or a L.
Shcherbinina will play Bilchev (Georgia Tech) - 9 AM - It looks like the next singles match is a 2 PM with a W or a L.
Guzman will play #7 Tomase (Tennessee) - 9 AM - It looks like the next singles match is a 2 PM with a W or a L.
Ruiz will play Tverijonaite (Arizona State) - 11 AM - It looks like the next singles match is a 4 PM with a W or a L.

In the Milwaukee Classic Sept. 22-25 four other Sooner women will start play today (Friday) in both Doubles and Singles.

In Doubles play:

Emma Straker (Returning JR) and Zdena Safarova (FR from Czech Republic) play Cayetano and Piper at 9 AM. I think if they win, that they will play on Saturday at 3 PM.
Ava Catanzarite (XFER JR from UCLA) and Romana Cisovska (Returning SOPH) play Mukhortova/Cai at 9 AM. I think if they win, that they will play on Saturday at 3 PM.

In Singles play:

Straker plays Cayetano at 10:15 AM. With a Win, I think Straker will play at 1:00 PM
Safarova plays Cadar at 10:15 AM. With a Win, I think Safarova will play at 1:00 PM
Cisovska plays Weise at 11:30 AM. With a Win, I think Cisovska will play at 2:15 PM
Catanzarite plays Miller at 11:30 AM. With a Win, i think Catanzarite will play at 2:15 PM

In Singles play at the North Carolina State Ranked Spotlight tourney, here are the results for the Sooner Women:

Urrutia played Tanguilig (North Carolina) - 9 AM - Urrutia dropped her match 6-2, 4-6, 3-6. Urrutia then played at 2 PM vs Fliegner (Mich) and WON - 6-2, 6-3. Urrutia will play Saturday at 9 AM vs Jain (Georgia Tech).

Shcherbinina played Bilchev (Georgia Tech) - 9 AM - Shcherbinina dropped her match 4-6, 4-6. Shcherbinina then played at 2 PM vs Akli (S Car) and dropped that match 6-7, 6-2, 0-1.

Guzman played #7 Tomase (Tennessee) - 9 AM - Guzman WON her match 6-4, 6-2, Guzman then played Rencheli (N Car St) at 2 PM and dropped that match 5-7, 6-1, 2-6.

Ruiz played Tverijonaite (Arizona State) - 11 AM - Ruiz WON her match 6-3, 7-5. Ruiz then played Pochkaleva (Tex) and dropped that match 0-6, 0-6.

In Doubles play, both Sooner Doubles teams play on Sunday at 9 AM in their next Doubles match. Guzman/Shcherbinina play at due from Arizona State. Ruiz/Urrutia play a duo from South Carolina.

Catanzarite plays Miller at 11:30 AM. Catanzarite WON her match 6-0, 6-0. Catanzarite played at 2:15 PM vs Piper. Catanzarite dropped her match 4-6, 3-6. Catanzarite plays Subhash at 10:15 AM on Saturday.

In the Milwaukee Classic: (OU Women)

In Singles play Saturday:

Straker played Navarro at 9 AM on Saturday. Straker WON - 6-2, 6-4.

Safarova plays Ribaudo at 10:15 AM on Saturday. Safarova WON - 6-2, 6-3 for her first career win for OU. Safarova WD from her next match.

Cisovska plays Cataldi at 10:15 AM on Saturday. Cisovska Lost - 0-6, 6-3, 0-1. Cisovska then played Subash - Lost 3-6. 4-6.

Catanzarite plays Subhash at 10:15 AM on Saturday. Catanzarite WON - 6-4, 4-6, 1-0. Catanzarite then played Cataldi - WON - 6-2, 6-4.

In Doubles play Saturday:

I thought that both teams, Straker/Safarova and Catanzarite/Cisovska would play at 3 PM on Saturday. I cannot find a result for those matches if they played.

In the North Carolina State Ranked Spotlight: (OU Women)

Urrutia played Jain (Ga Tech) - Urrutia WON 6-7, 6-4, 1-0. - Urrutia then played Hamner (South Carolina) and Lost 6-4, 5-7, 0-1.

Garcia-Ruiz played Schuknecht (Miami) - Garcia-Ruiz WON 6-2, 6-0.

Shcherbinina played Morley (Arizona State) - Shcherbinina WON 6-1, 3-6, 1-0.

Shcherbinina played Xu (Virginia) - Shcherbinina WON 7-6, 6-4.
