Oklahoma Soccer plays @ Nebraska-Omaha in Non-Conference Match!

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Soccer team will travel to Omaha for their final non-conference match of the season on Sunday in a 1 PM match. The Sooners are coming off of a disappointing, but productive tie against Kansas on Thursday night in a 2-2 result. OU held the lead 2-0 at the half but Kansas scored twice to tie the match in the second half.

Omaha's last match was last Sunday where they dropped a match to Drake 1-0. Omaha is 2-3-2 on the season including 1-3 in their last 4 matches. To their credit, Omaha tied the SEC Missouri squad 2-2 in the preseason action. Oklahoma holds a 4-3-1 record after the Kansas tie.

Omaha has scored 11 goals in their 7 games against 10 goals allowed. Oklahoma has scored 25 goals against 14 goals this season. But the Sooners have not scored a goal on the road yet this season. I would bet that new Coach Mott is anxious to correct that 0 on their schedule with goals on Sunday at Omaha.

Oklahoma played many of the players extended minutes on Thursday. I wonder if the game plan will be to reduce the minutes for some of the Sooner mainstay players like Hawkins, Andie Wolfe and Cailey England as well as other Sooners that regularly play 60 minutes of more.

The match against Omaha will be televised on the Summit League Network but a membership is required. The cost is $9.95 for a monthly subscription. The match can also be followed via 'Live Stats'.

Good luck to the Sooners on Sunday!

It will be a longer trip home for the Oklahoma Sooners than it was to arrive in Omaha for the Sunday match against Nebraska-Omaha because the Sooners dropped the match to Omaha 2-1 on Sunday. From everything I saw watching the match, it was a match that probably Oklahoma should win. But twice in the first half the ball got into a bad place against the Sooners and Omaha cashed in for goals to lead 2-0 which held up for the remainder of the 90 minutes of play. The two Omaha goals came in the 12th and 20th minutes of the first half.

The first Omaha goal was right down the middle of the box. Behrens passed the ball from outside the box to a point out in front of Green who was headed for the goal with Callie England near. As Green and England approached the ball Sierra Giorgio, the OU GK, charged at the ball to stop the shot. They all collided about 10 yards away from the goal as Green got a foot on the ball and pushed it past Giorgio as all three players took a tumble with England receiving the worst of the contact. Giorgio had no choice but to rush the ball on the play but was not able to get there or stop the shot. the pass from Behrens had a nice touch on it as she had the time to measure the pass.

The second Omaha goal was after a Corner Kick by Omaha. Initially the kick into the box was defended by OU, but the clearing of the ball ended up at Gunderson's feet and was quickly going back at the goal beyond Giorgio as she was in a tangle at the original point of attack on the corner placement.

Oklahoma did manage to score for the first time on the road this season in the 2nd half on nice pass from Alexis Washington #12 on the from inside the box the box on the right side near the end line that found Eselenna Galekhutle #10 for a one touch goal into the right side of the Omaha goal. The score occurred in the 62nd minute of the match (17th minute of the 2nd half.

The starters for Oklahoma was the expected lineup as it has been for several games now.

GK - Sierra Giorgio #1
DEF - Callie England #8, Andie Wolfe #19 and Cassie Clifton #23
MIDs - Muriel Kroflin #22, Michelle Pak #7 and Leone Weber #31
Outside Halfs - Alexis Washington #12 and Hadley Murrell #5
FWD - Emma Hawkins #2 and Dani Wolfe #16
England, Washington and Hawkins were the only three Sooners to play 80+ minutes in the match. I think due to a Yellow Card that Andie Wolfe received, the Sooner coaches removed her for some minutes to prevent a 2nd Yellow card. As OU tried to tie the game, A Wolfe re-enters and played her season low of 75 minutes.

Subs for OU were Avery Stephens #4 DEF- 54 minutes, Galekhutle MID-FWD- 45 minutes, Zoe Parkhurst #6 MID- 39 minutes, Keller Matise #9 OH-29 minutes, Ella Pappas #15 - OH- 28 minutes, Chelsea Wagoner #20 FWD- 9 minutes and Morganne Eikelbarner #24 FWD- 5 minutes. Eikelbarner played for the first time in 4 games due to an ankle injury against Gonzaga.

Oklahoma definitely stepped up their effort and pushed forward in the second half and dominated the play and possession of the ball. OU outshot Omaha 10 to 0 in the 2nd half and 20 to 5 for the match. Eight (8) of Oklahoma's shots were on goal compared to 3 for Omaha. Several times in the second half OU was just a bit off on shots or they just did not have enough steam to make it to the net. In the 80th an OU shot from outside the box, arrived at the Omaha goal high but under the crossbar. As the Omaha GK caught the ball she stepped back across the goal line while she extended her arms to keep the ball on the field side of the goal line. It almost was a careless goal allowed on Konsmo, the GK. The Sooners had two other chances to score in the final two minutes. The first was on another pass in from Washington to Galekhutle on the right side of the goal. Galekhutle redirected the ball with one touch just wide of the goal. The final shot by OU was by Emma Hawkins who somehow got feed a pass down the middle between to defenders. Hawkins got to the ball as the Omaha GK rushed her. Hawkins tried to push the ball to the left of the GK but Konsmo managed to get a foot out to block the shot and then controlled the ball.

Oklahoma also picked up a second Yellow Card in the first half but I am unsure what it was for. The Yellow was not issued to a player.

Oklahoma drops to a 4-4-1 record with the loss, with all the losses coming on the road. Nebraska-Omaha increases their record to 3-3-2.

It was a match that OU could have salvaged a tie and maybe won outright but Omaha managed to still win 2-1. The trip home could have been much happier for the Sooners.

The Sooners return to action in Big 12 play as they host Kansas State on Thursday night at 7 PM at John Crain Field in Norman. Kansas State played Cincinnati to a 1-1 tie in Manhattan last Thursday night. On Saturday, K-State did not play this weekend. The Wildcats hold a 2-4-3 record on the season.

Good luck to the Sooners on Thursday night.
