Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Women's Soccer Team will play their final pre-conference match on Thursday night at John Crain Field @ 8 PM. The Sooners will take a 3-3 record into the match while Murray State owns a record of 2-4. Oklahoma has won all three of their home games in 2023 as they defeated Tulsa 6-0, Oral Roberts 4-2 and Arkansas-Pine Bluff 8-1. On the road this season the Sooners are 0-3 with losses to Samford 0-4, Gonzaga 0-3 and Montana 0-1. The Sooners and Coach Mott will be trying to get back on the winning side of the score as the Sooners have dropped their last three matches and have not scored during those three matches. The Sooners have scored 18 goals and allowed 11 goals.

The Murray State Racers have played to a 1-3 record at home and a 1-1 record on the road. For the season, they have scored 5 goals and allowed 9 goals.

Thursday nights game was originally scheduled for a 7 PM start, but due to heart advisors, the match will be delayed one hour and will now start at 8 PM. Here is the Sooners announcement of the game time change.

The Sooner starting lineup has been fairly consistent during the early season with only a few changes. In their last match against Montana, the Sooners played 17 players extending the playing time of the starters. Sierra Giorgio also made her first start in goal for the Sooners against Montana.

Forwards - Emma Hawkins and Danielle Wolfe, Midfielders - Leonie Weber, Alyssa Washington and Michelle Pak, Defenders - Andi Wolfe and Cailey England have started all 6 matches.

Midfielders - Hadley Murrell, Muriel Kroflin and Zoe Parkhurst and Defender - Avery Stevens have started 4 matches. Defender Cassie Clifton has started 2 matches. GK Olivia Ramey has started 5 matches with Sierra Giorgio starting 1 match. Reserves Chelsea Wagoner and Keller Matise have played in al 6 matches. Keller Brown has played in 5 matches. Morganne Eikelbarner (FWD) played in the first 4 matches but left the Samford match after a hard slide into her legs. Eikelbarner has not played in the last two matches. Koby Commandant (MID) started in an exhibition match to start the season but suffered an injury and has not played since.

The Sooners will try to get back on the winning side on Thursday in the final pre-conference game. Oklahoma will host Kansas next Thursday at John Crain Field at 7 PM in their first Big 12 match of the season.

Good luck to the Sooners on Thursday night.

The 'home cooking and beds' must really agree with the Sooner Soccer Team. Last night they returned to John Crain Field and returned to the winning column with a dominant win over Murray State 5-1. OU led 3-1 at the half and added two goals in the 2nd half to produce the final score. The win raised the Sooner record to 4-3 while the Racers from Murray State dropped to 2-5.

It was truly the Emma Hawkins and Leone Weber show last night with assists from Alexis Washington, Hadley Murrell (2) and Michelle Pak. Emma Hawkins picked up her 2nd Hat Trick of the season and her career last night with 3 goals against the Murray State Racers. It is the first time that the Oklahoma Sooner Women's Soccer Team has had a player total 2 hat tricks in a season or in a career. It was truly a career moment for Hawkins. Leone Weber scored two goals on the night to set a new career goals in a match personal record for herself.

Here is a synopsis of the goals scored in the match:

- In the 6th minute, Alexis Washington for Oklahoma possessed the ball in the right side of the box area. Washington made a nice change of direction move with the ball and found an opening to pass the ball to Leone Weber who had inside position on a defender in the center of the box. Weber one-touched the pass from Washington into the back of the net passed the Racer GK. OU 1-0.

- Murray State scored about a minute later on a nice two pass goal. Hardy made a nice pass into the box to Young on the right side of the goal. Young passed or shot the ball across the goal mouth to Etter who beat a Sooner defender to the ball as OU GK Sierra Giorgio dove to intercept the pass. Etter one-touched the ball into the Sooner goal. Tie score 1-1.

- In the 27th minute, OU's Hadley Murrell carried the ball down the right side of the pitch deep to the corner. She made a very nice pass across the goal area to Hawkins who stepped back from a defender and timed her jump well to place a header into the left side of the goal passed the defender and the Racer GK. Nice pass and nice header by the 5'3" Hawkins. OU 2 to 1 over Murray State.

- In the 40th minute of the match, a Sooner from the midfield area on the bench side of the pitch passed the ball towards the Sooner offensive end with a nice left-footed kick in a crowd as she went to the ground. The pass found Emma Hawkins as she bent at the waist to head the ball to herself forward towards the goal past a defender. Hawkins outran another defender and dribbled the ball towards the goal as she made a nice 'deek' on the onrushing GK to elude her and the defenders behind her and calmly kicked the ball into the Murray State goal. Sooners lead 3-1.

- Five minutes into the 2nd half, Murrell retrieved a loose ball on the left side of the pitch near the sideline. She passed the ball in to the box on the near side of the box on the left side of the goal mouth. Once again, Hawkins was there and timed her jump well again to head the ball towards the goal. The header bounced off a MSU defender and passed the MSU GK for her third goal of the match. Sooners 4 - Racers 1.

- Two minutes later, Leone Weber and Michelle Pak played pass and go in the center of the pitch outside the box. Weber passe the ball to an open Pak to her left. Left found an opening to pass the ball back to Weber as she moved towards the goal. At the top of the box, Weber sent a strong shot into the top left area of the gaol passed the MSU GK for the final goal of the match. OU 5 - MSU 1.

Here is the staff writers article about the win for the Sooners:

I think it was the 3rd straight game with the 10 playing starters the same. It was the 2nd straight start for the GK Giorgio. Here were the starters:

GK - Giorgio
Defenders - England, A. Wolfe, Clifton
Midfielders - Kroflin, Pak and Weber
Outside Halfs - Washington and Murrell
Forwards - Hawkins and D. Wolfe

For the first time this season, no Sooner played the entire 90 minutes. But Andie Wolfe was close as she logged 88 minutes of play. Four other Sooners played between 69 and 71 minutes (Hawkins, England, Pak and D. Wolfe). Eight Sooner played off the bench with Stevens leading the way with 53 minutes. Parkhurst played 49 minutes, Pappas played 45 minutes, Galekhutle played 39 minutes, Matise played 32 minutes, Commaret played 16 minutes, Brown played 15 minutes and Wagner played 7 minutes.

The Sooners possessed the ball for 57% of the time according to the stats. It seemed like more. they also had the ball in their offensive end of the field 64% of that time. That is almost 33 minutes of the game with the ball in their offensive end. The Sooners controlled the ball in the midfield area well with crisp passing and nice triangle passing to move the ball. The Sooners looked much better in the midfield area last night than they looked in the three road matches against Samford, Gonzaga and Montana. But the competition was not the same either. The important thing was that the Sooners controlled the ball, got the ball into the box and the Sooners scored well with 5 goals after being shutout the last three matches.

The Sooners are off until next Thursday night (Sept 14th) when they host Kansas at John Crain Field for a 7 PM match. The Big 12 looks strong this season. I will post a Big 12 Soccer primer next Monday to detail how the Big 12 teams look through the pre-conference play.

Congrats to the Sooners and to Hawkins and Weber in particular for the new records. I also think that every Sooners starter played well last night. Off the bench Stevens, Parkhurst, Pappas and Galenhutle played well also.
