Sooner Offense Arrives - Sooners win 10-1 over Stanford - 3-0 !

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooners found a friend on Friday night against Stanford. The 'crooked-letter' runs scored in an inning. It was nice to re-join with that friend once again. In the first two games Oklahoma had only scored in single-run innings. The Sooners won 10-1 over Stanford for the team's second win over a ranked team. It was also the Sooners first run-rule win of the season.

The first 'crooked-letter' of the season was in the bottom of the second. With two outs the Sooners rallied. Boone walked, Torres doubled to LC to plate Boone. Erickson singled to the right of 2B to plate Torres (Erickson's first career hit and RBI). Coleman walked. Jennings hit a line drive double to RF just over the head of the RF as the ball ticked off the fielder's glove to drive in 2 runs. OU lead 4-0 at this point.

The second 'crooked-letter' of the season was in the bottom of the 5th. The Sooners led off with 3 singles by Jennings, Lee and Lyons. After a FC on a 5-2 ground out, Brito hit a ball deep to RC for a double and 3 RBIs. After a walk to Boone and an infield single by pinch-hitter Nugent, Bahl added a fielder's choice RBI for the 4th run of the inning to make the score 8-1.

In the bottom of the 6th, Jennings led-off with a 4-pitch walk. Lee then broke the glass for the Sooners with a deep 2-run HR to left field to end the game in a 10-1 run-rule victory.

Stanford choose to sit their best pitcher, Vawter, for this game after she pitched a CG on Thursday. The Cardinal plays a DH on Saturday. Maybe Stanford decided to focus on Saturday's DH rather than against the Sooners. They play San Jose State and Duke on Saturday.

In the circle for the Sooners, Alex Storako started the first game of her career ot wearing Maize and Gold. She pitched pretty well. (Yes, I am being a bit tough on pitchers this year.) Storako pitched 5.2 innings and allowed only 3 hits and 1 walk while tallying 6 Ks and 1 solo HR allowed. The reason for the 'pretty good' is the four-pitch walk to open the game and the solo-HR she allowed. Of her 6 Ks, the last three were strikeouts with the batters looking at strike three. Storako threw 78 pitches with 47 Ks. (60.3%) That % could be a bit higher also for Storako.

With two outs in the top of the 6th, Storako gave way to Kiersten Deal for her first time appearing in the Sooner pitching circle. She made quick work of it a she got the first batter she faced to check her swing and hit a weak ground ball to third that Brito gobbled up for a 5-3 out to end the inning. 1 pitch, 1 out. Can't be any quicker than that.

A few things of note:

= Jennings was 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs, a double and a walk.
= Lee was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, a HR.
= Brito was 1 for 2 with 3 RBIs and a double and a walk.
= Boone had 2 walks in the game.
= Torres was 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI.
= Erickson was 1 for 2 with an RBI. (Both the hit and the RBI were the first of her career.)
= The Sooners were 10 for 25 with 3 doubles, a HR and 5 walks with 0 Ks.

= Sanders made two nice plays at first base. the first was a jumping catch of a line drive in the 2nd inning. The second play was an unassisted double play on a caught line drive hit right at her followed by tagging behind the runner on first for the DP.

= Every Sooner that has had an at bat this season through 3 games, has also recorded a hit. The two players that have not had an at bat, Hodge and Coor have not had a hit yet. [Edit: Grace Green has not had an at bat either. Sorry about that Grace.]

It was much better game for the Sooners in their third try of the season.

The Sooners will play Washington tonight at 9 PM. Washington is 3-0 so far also as they have won their three games by the score of 22-3. More on this matchup later.
