Sooner Women's Golf - Tourney this weekend at Belmar Golf Club

Post by OUBeliever56A »

The Oklahoma Sooners Women's Golf Team is hosting a tournament this weekend thru Monday at Belmar Golf Club locally just north of Norman, OK. The tourney format is for 54-holes with 18 holes played on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Women last played about 3 weeks ago in Monterey, CA where they finished in 7th of 8 team in a strong field of leading NCAA Women's Teams.

Here is the staff writers article about the Tournament this weekend.

Today, Saturday, it looks like the pairings start play at 9:00 AM with OU, OSU and Tulsa in the first group of the #1 Tee. The article does not address if there is an entry fee for fans or not. Last summer I went out to watch the Men's Team play in the Regional at Jimmie Austin and had an enjoyable day watching them play. If you can fit a couple of hours into your schedule, it is something to consider to watch the teams play.

Good luck to the Sooner ladies in the tournament.

The Sooner's Schooner Fall was a tougher place to play golf on Sunday. After 11 of the 16 teams shot under par on Saturday, NONE of the teams could match par on Sunday. the best team round on Sunday belonged to Houston who shot 2-ove par, 282. With their round, Houston moved into 3rd place in the tournament. The Oklahoma Sooners still are in second place after Sunday and their 10-over par round of 290 as a team. They trail Florida State by six shots going into today's final round.

Here is the staff writers article about Sunday's round.

For the Sooners, three golfers played well on Sunday.

Raychel Nelke, FR-#5, shot an even par round of 70 for the Sooners. I think this is her best outing as a Sooner. She carded 3 birdies against 3 bogeys on the day. Mikhaela Fortuna, SR-#1, shot a 1-ove par round with 2 birdies and 3 bogeys. Savannah Barber, FR-#2, shot 2-over par with a scorecard of 3 birdies and 3 bogeys with one double.

The last two Sooner playing on the tournament team were Meagan Winans, SO-#4, and Maria Fernanda Martinez (Red-SR-#3, who shot 77 and 79 respectively. The Sooners had 1 birdie between them on the day.

The four remaining Sooners playing and a second team for Oklahoma, shot 13-over as all four scores counted. Madison Smith, GR SR-#4, carded 5 birdies on the day against 5 bogeys for an even par round of 70. Smith had 4 birdies on the back nine. Kaylee Vesely, JR-#1, shot a 73 for 3-over par. Her round included 1 birdie and 4 bogeys. Nina Lang, JR-#2, and Gracie Mayo, FR-#3, both shot 5-over 75's on Sunday. Mayo had the lone birdie between the two golfers.

The Sooners start the day in 2nd place on Monday trailing Florida State by 6 and ahead of 8 teams within 8 strokes of the Sooners. It the Sooners play well on Monday they can secure a Top 5 finish or better. The Sooners, Seminoles and Cougars tee off starting at 10:10 today on Hole #1. The second squad of Sooners tee off starting at 9:50 on Hole #10.

Good luck to the Sooner Ladies today at Belmar Golf Club.

The Oklahoma Sooner Women's Golf Team shot a 2-over 282 on Monday to finish in 6th place with an Even Par 3-day total of 840 in the Schooner Fall Classic. Florida State finished in 1st place with a 12-under par 828 3-day total. TCU finished n 2nd place with a 831 total, Oklahoma State finished 3rd with a 833 total. Houston and Baylor finished in 4th and 5th with 834 and 836 total scores in the tourney.

The remaining 4 Sooner Women's Golfers also played as the 2nd Sooner Team in the tourney. They shot a 13-over par 293 on Monday.

Here is the staff writers article about Day 3 at the Schooner Fall Classic.

For the Sooners on these were the scores on Monday:

Rachel Nelke (#5) led the way with a 2-under 68 with 4 birdies and 2 bogey on the day. Nelke finished in a T15 for the tourney with a 1-under total of 209.
Mikhaela Fortuna (#1) added an Even Par round of 70 with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys. Fortuna finished in a T10 with a 3-under total of 207.
Maria Fernanda Martinez (#3) also shot an Even Par round of 70. Martinez was 7-over par for the tourney with a 217 and finished in a T57.
Savana Barber (#2) shot a 4-over 74 on Monday. For the tourney she shot 2-over 212 and finished in a T32.
Megan Winans (4) shot a 7-over 77 on Monday. For the tourney she shot a 12-over 222 for a T74.
It is nice to see Nelke bounce back after her first tourney in California to play well in this event. Fortuna continues her strong play for the Sooners in the fall. Martinez has shot 4 good rounds with 2 not-so-good rounds in the fall. Barber has also played solidly with only 1 high round. Winans has been a bit of up-and-down in the fall so far.

For the second set of Sooners, these were the scores on Monday:

Karen Vesely (#1) shot a very nice 3-under 67 on Monday. For the tourney, she shot 1-over par for a 211 total and a T27 total.
Madison Smith (#2) shot 6-over for a 76 on Monday. For the tourney, Smith shot a 6-over 216 for a T49 finish.
Gracie Mayo (#3) shot a 4-over 74 on Monday. For the tourney Mayo shot 14-over at 224 for a T77 finish.
Nina Lang (#4) shot a 6-over round of 76 on Monday. For the tourney Lang shot 17-over at 227 for an 83rd finish.
The next action for the Sooners is the Illini invitational on Oct 10-11 at the Medinah Country Club in Merion, Ohio. It will be interesting to see if Vesely and maybe Smith can vault themselves up to the Top 5 players for the next event. There should be strong competition for the last couple of spots on the team.
