College Position Preview: 6 Second Basemen to Watch in 2022

As we work our way around the horn on the college position previews for 2022, we’ve made our way to second base.

Previously, we’ve done spotlights on:
6 Catchers to Watch in 2022 ( I previously posted this article as Hansen was included.)
7 First Basemen to Watch in 2022

The “top of the heap” of second basemen includes some stellar defenders who also pack a lot of pop in their bats.
Listed in alphabetical order, here are some of the nation’s best at second base…

Tiare Jennings, Oklahoma
The reigning National Freshman of the Year burst onto the scene in 2021 with a stellar offensive campaign that also earned her All-American honors. Jennings is already a leader on the Sooner offense even after just one collegiate season and she is one the most potent and lethal hitters in the nation.

Janae Jefferson, Texas
It seems like Jefferson has been at Texas for the better part of a decade at this point, and her impact on the Longhorns program falls in line with that theory, too. She is a three-time All-American and one of the best to ever wear the Longhorn uniform. Even as transfers have come and gone, Jefferson has been the greatest constant in the Texas lineup.

Hannah Adams, Florida
You’d be hard-pressed to find a more clutch hitter than Adams at any point during the 2021 season. When her team needed a big hit or a late RBI, Tim Walton knew who he could count on. Even despite her frequent heroics at the plate, Adams flew a bit under the radar last season, likely thanks in large part to her get-’er-done mindset and head-down-and-go approach.

Karli Spaid, Miami (Ohio)
Spaid was one of the greatest breakout stars of last season, and her power-hitting numbers were off the charts as she helped guide Miami to an incredible season and a conference title. Spaid impressively combined power – 17 home runs – with speed – 19 stolen bases – and incredible consistency at the plate in the form of a .403 batting average and 19 multi-hit games.

Kinsley Washington, UCLA
The heroine of the Bruins’ 2019 Women’s College World Series title, Washington has one season left at Easton Stadium. A veteran presence both in the batting order and the defensive lineup, Washington’s experience comes in handy – as does her own penchant for coming through in the late innings and in the clutch.

Rachel Lewis, Northwestern
Lewis has been a major part of Northwestern’s resurgence over the last few years, and her solid defense and slugging power remain a stalwart part of the Wildcats’ game plan. One of the more consistent hitters in the Big Ten and always a threat to get on base or to go yard, Lewis is sometimes overlooked but she remains a top-level talent in the infield
